HYPOTHESIS 3: Being in a relationship reduces the likelihood of perceiving
of one self as a t risk.
The relative influence and potential interaction of cues and
heuristics was examined in an exploratory fashion. Survey and in
depth interview data were used for both hypothesis testing and
explora tory analysis.
Respondents
METHODOLOGY
One thousand students were selected from seven Montreal CEGEPs
using a two-staged stratified sampling technique. In the first stage,
colleges were selected to insure language, ethnic, religious, and
income diversity of respondents. In the second stage, classes in courses
required of aIl students were sampled. Between October 1988 and
January 1989, aIl students attending the selected classes were invited to
complete questionnaires exploring their beliefs, attitudes, knowledge,
and sexual behaviors. I addition, a volunteer subsample of twenty
five students from among those surveyed (13 women and 12 men)
participated in minimally structure d, depth interviews further
exploring their sexual conduct and risk reduction activities, and in
particular their personal perceptions of HIV risk and risk reduction.
Of the 954 returned questionnaires, 866 met the samplig criteria of
age (17-22 years), marital status (never married), and completion of
the questionnaire. The sample included 363 (42%) males and 503
(58%) females. Of these, 486 (56%) reported coital experience, with 154
(54%) women and 127 (63%) men reporting that they had had more
than one coital partner. Though 79% and 75% of the coitally active
men and women respectively reported they had used condoms at
sore time, only 28% and 26% (respectively) reported frequent or
regular use in the past six months. Clearly, the majority of these
young adults had engaged in sexual activities which placed them at
risk for HIV infection.
Questionnaire Design
AH variables were measured using self-report responses to
questions selected from prior research on sexual transmission of HIV.
Questions were pre-tested on a sample of CEGEP students and
modified based on pre-test results. The reliability and validity of
measures was assessed using inter-item measures of association of
different aspects of the same concept (coefficients ranged from .72 to
