152 Revue sexologique / Sexological Review Among active subjects, oral-genital sex was found to be significantly less frequent among non-manual workers, as for their rates of coitus (Samson et al., 1991). And the rates of oral sex remained lower among non-manu al workers, even wh en education, income, and the frequencies of coitus, were independently or simultaneously controlled for. These findings are contrasting with most data on oral genital sex. Detailed analyses between both occupation groups have shown that neither age, religiosity, parenthood nor parity seemed to be involved, but that this effect was genuine only among subjects whose relationships were five years old or less. No explanation could be found with regard to these findings. Sexual general satisfaction towards one's sexual partner was also correlated to higher oral-genital frequencies, as it was the case for the frequencies of coitus (Samson et al., 1991). As Trussell and Westoff (1980) have concluded about intercourse, subjects in our study who have indicated they enjoyed sex more, have had oral-genital activities more often. It is however difficult to ascertain if this indicates a true relationship, for it might be the effect of a bias in reporting one's sexual behaviors. Indeed, Catania et al. (1990) have indicated that a positive evaluation of one's own sexual satisfaction could inadvertently bring about the reporting of higher frequencies of sexual behaviors. The present study has shown that, indeed, oral-genital behaviors were, nowadays, intrinsic and important elements in the sexual scripts of married or cohabiting individuals. As it was the case for coitus, age seemed the key stone in the incidence and the rate of this sexual behavior. But a parting seems to occur near the fiftieth anniversary, older men and women being less prone to perform oral genital sex. Since there was a marked increase in the frequency of oral genital behaviors during the 70s (Gagnon and Simon, 1987) and the 80s (Rubenstein and Tavris, 1987; Wyatt et al., 1988), one could consider that a cohort effect, more than a chronological age effect, might be at play, albeit the present data cannot directly confirm this line of interpretation.
