Titre abrégé. - Entomofaune au sol des empnses autoroutières du sud du Québec
(Canada).
Abstract. - Ground Insect Composition and Effect of Reduced Mowing Frequency
on Ground Insects Along Highway Rights-of-Way of Three Different Landscapes
(Agricultural, Forestrial and Suburban) in Southern Québec (Canada). - The
specific objectives ofthis study were (1) to characterize the entomological composition
of the grounds ofhighway rights-of-way crossing three different landscapes (agricultural,
forestrial and suburban) in southern Québec (Canada) and (2) to determine, over a three
year period, the effects of a reduced mowing frequency on insect abundance and
diversity. Ground specimens were captured using pitfall traps and were counted and
identified to determine the ten dominant insect families. Landscape, mowing frequency,
year and pitfall traps location had no significant effect at 0,05 signification level on
ground insect abundance or diversity. However, multivariate analysis showed segragate
influences of open or c10sed landscapes. Dominant families were : Formicidae
(Hymenoptera), Entomobryidae (Collembola), Staphylinidae (Coleoptera), Isotomidae
(Collembola), Sphaeroceridae (Diptera), Cicadellidae (Homoptera), Carabidae
(Coleoptera), Gryllidae (Orthoptera), Sciaridae and Phoridae (Diptera). Effects of
landscape or reduced mowing frequency on ground insects could not be c1early defined.
A five to ten year study should better allow one to extract tendancies for highway rights
of-way ground insect richness. Nevertheless, this study identified insect families that can
commonly be found on the ground of highway rights-of-way in southern Québec.
