With Eleanor as his model, Sykes’ sculpture bears flowing veils and has a finger
held across her lips to symbolise the secret they shared. A friend of Lord
Montagu, a certain Charles Rolls, was inspired by the elegance of the piece and
decided to similarly ornament all of the company’s automobiles with a statuette.
Sykes turned again to Eleanor Thornton for inspiration and created the Spirit of
Ecstasy which has adorned every single Rolls-Royce vehicle since 1911.

Sykes prend comme modèle Eleanor et la représente dans une robe flottante posant
un doigt sur ses lèvres, comme pour tenir secrète la relation des deux amants.

également ami de Lord Montagu à commander au sculpteur une statuette qui
ornerait désormais la calandre de toutes les Rolls Royce. Sykes reprend à nouveau
pour modèle celle qui est affectueusement surnommée Thorn. Le Spirit of Ecstasy
Thornton would sadly never witness her success.

In 1915 Lord Montagu had to travel to India, and
with a certain degree of understanding and
acceptance by Lady Cecil was instead accompanied
by Eleanor. On Christmas Day 1915
the two of them embarked on the SS Persia
at Marseilles. Five days later a German U-boat
torpedoed the ship and it sank within minutes.
Lord Montagu was among the 10 passengers
and crew fortunate enough to survive the sinking,
but Eleanor Thornton’s body was never
recovered.

Cecil semble avoir compris et accepté la
relation qui unit les deux amants. En effet, c’est
Eleanor qui accompagne John. Ils embarquent tous
deux à Marseille sur le SS Persia le jour de Noël
1915. Cinq jours plus tard, un U-Boat allemand
torpille le navire qui coule en quelques minutes.

In 1903, Thornton had given birth to a baby girl

at a time when having a child out of wedlock was seriously frowned upon.
Though the child was given up for adoption, Lord Montagu remained in contact
with her throughout. It was only after his death in 1929 that the rest of the family
discovered the existence of their half sister, Joan. As the friendship grew, the then
Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, Edward, officially recognised Elenor’s daughter as a
true member of the family – as such forever acknowledging the secret ecstasy
that had united his father John Scott and Elenor Thornton. As a final twist, one of
Joan’s sons now works for the company that makes the world’s most beautiful
cars, Rolls-Royce, and for whom his grandmother is the eternal figurehead.

Mais Lord Montagu ne l’oublie pas et garde le contact avec elle. Ce n’est qu’en
1929, à la mort de John, que sa famille et ses enfants découvrent l’existence
de leur demi-sœur, Joan. Des liens se nouent et le troisième Baron Montagu de
Beaulieu reconnait la fille d’Eleanor Thornton comme un membre à part entière de la
famille, perpétuant ainsi l’amour passionné qui unit John Scott, second Baron
Montagu de Beaulieu et Eleanor Thornton, la femme qui orne les plus belles voitures
du monde. Ironie de l’histoire, l’un des fils de Joan, travaillera pour… Rolls Royce.
