Every conceivable business need has been catered for down to the elegant fold out
wooden table on which to rest a laptop. Confirming its family friendly credentials,
the Ghost also includes Isofix anchor points for an infant’s car seat and individual
television screens to entertain older children.
As comfortable as the Ghost may be for passengers, this remains a true driver’s
car. The dashboard is a blend of traditional natural wood aesthetics and modernity,
that maintains individually adjustable climate controls yet incorporates BMW’s
navigation and control systems as prepared by Rolls-Royce engineers. The majority
of these functions are also available to passengers, the controls being concealed
within the central armrest that can otherwise be raised to provide additional seating.
The lightest touch of the accelerator spurs the V12 to a discrete yet powerful growl.
The acceleration is astonishing. Driver and passengers are pressed still deeper into
their seats with butterflies fluttering in their stomachs as the Ghost reaches
100km/h (62mph) in a mere 4.9 seconds – better than certain models of 911. More
than a sports car, this is a thoroughbred saloon with performance true to the magic
carpet ride Rolls-Royce is famous for with only the most demanding of accelerations
disturbing the peace within. For its size, the Ghost can be manoeuvred with
ease. Its handling is similarly remarkable and thanks to stability controls, bringing
this 2.5 tonne grande dame to a stop involves a minimum of drama. Parking is made
all the more convenient by an array of radars, cameras, and other visual aids. While
such equipment may seem like a break from tradition for those familiar with earlier
models of Rolls-Royce, it merely reflects the elegant rebalancing of priorities which
elevate the driving experience to that enjoyed by the passengers. High praise
indeed.
