The Byblos celebrates 45 years
EARLY IN THE SIXTIES, BILLIONAIRE HOTELIER JEAN PROSPER GAY-PARA AFFORDED HIMSELF
A 10 MILLION FRANC FOLLY IN WHAT WAS THEN JUST A SMALL FISHING VILLAGE IN THE VAR.
Completed in 1967 and built in the centre of St Tropez, the Byblos was inaugurated
by its celebrated patron Brigitte Bardot on the night of her wedding
to German billionaire Gunter Sachs. The event’s guest list included a roll call
of French celebrities including the writer Françoise Sagan, singer Juliette Greco,
painter Bernard Buffet, and producer Eddie Barclay whose photographer
son would himself collaborate with the Byblos some years later.

Terminé en 1967, l’hôtel est inauguré par sa marraine, Brigitte Bardot lors de sa nuit
de noce avec le milliardaire allemand Gunter Sachs. Les invités sont nombreux
et célèbres et on croise pour cette toute première nuit au Byblos l’écrivain Françoise
Sagan, la chanteuse Juliette Greco, le peintre Bernard Buffet ou le producteur Eddie
Barclay dont le fils, photographe, travaillera des années plus tard avec le Byblos.
But 1967 was also the year that the Six-Day War began, and Jean Prosper
Gay-Para decided to return to the Lebanon. He sold his hotel to French businessman
Sylvain Floirat. This was to be the beginning of a grand glamorous adventure
that has already lasted for 45 years. Far removed from the shackling conventions
of other grand hotels of the period, the Byblos
instead mirrored St Tropez and established itself
as a haven of relaxed festivity – an eminently
seductive combination which greatly appealed
to the international jet set who were quick to make
the hotel their summer home. As part of its 45th
anniversary celebrations the legendary St Tropez
institution is offering a series of exceptional products,
all created exclusively for the occasion and
reflecting the luxury, quality, and elegance for
which it has become famous.
Roederer, a longtime fixture of the Byblos and the
fabled Caves du Roy parties, has dressed its best
vintage, Cristal, in a commemorative golden net.
The exceptional Jeroboam, a limited edition of just 40,
will be available exclusively at the Byblos during
the summer of 2012. Mont Blanc, creator of exceptional
writing instruments, has produced a commemorative
limited edition of 5 pens featuring the Byblos logo on the cap. Each pen
comes with a lacquered wood case and is accompanied by a set of 4 pastel inks
in shades reflecting the hotels colours. Luxurious yet playful luggage maker Pinel & Pinel
has created a Byblos exclusive gentlemen’s case featuring a cigar pouch, automatic
watch rotor, iPhone compatible sound system, toiletries case, a pocket for
condoms, a folder for important papers, slots for 2 credit cards, and sufficient
space for a change of shirt and trousers.
Mais 1967, c’est également l’année de la Guerre des Six Jours. Lorsqu’elle éclate, Jean
Prosper Gay-Para décide de rentrer au Liban et vend son hôtel à l’homme d’affaires
français Sylvain Floirat. Commence alors une saga qui rime avec succès, glamour et
détente et qui dure depuis 45 ans. Loin du carcan des hôtels luxueux des années 60,
le Byblos s’impose comme un palace décontracté,
sans protocole et festif, tout comme Saint-Tropez.
Le cocktail séduira immédiatement la jet-set qui
s’y retrouvera tous les étés, comme en famille.
Aujourd’hui, le Byblos fête ses 45 ans. Pour l’occasion,
le palace tropézien se dote d’un nouvelle
gamme de produits d’exception réalisés en exclusivité
pour l’hôtel par quatre maisons dont l’image reprend
les codes du Byblos : luxe, qualité et élégance.
Etroitement lié au Byblos, aux Caves du Roy et à
ses fêtes mythiques, Roederer a habillé sa meilleure
cuvée, Cristal, d’un filet d’or. Quarante exemplaires
de ce Jéroboam exceptionnel seront proposés
en exclusivité à l’hôtel pendant l’été 2012.
Montblanc et ses instruments d’écriture hors du
commun réalise de son côté une édition limitée
à 5 exemplaires pour cet anniversaire. Livré dans un coffret de bois laqué, chaque stylo
est accompagné de 4 encres pastels rappelant les couleurs du Byblos. L’emblème de
l’hôtel orne le capuchon. Luxueuse, décalée et décontractée, la maison de bagagerie
Pinel & Pinel a concocté pour le Byblos la Valise du Gentleman qui contient un étui à
cigare, un rotor pour montre automatique, un système son pour iPhone, une trousse de
toilette, une pochette pour papiers, une autre pour les préservatifs, 2 porte-cartes de
crédit et un espace chemise ou T-Shirt et jeans.

re-edited version of its Master Compressor Extreme Tourbillon timepiece – an truly
outstanding combination of high precision and exquisite beauty.
Enfin, également partenaire d’Aston Martin, la maison d’horlogerie Jaeger Lecoultre
réédite à 48 exemplaires la Master Compressor Extreme Tourbillon, résultat de l’éclatante
rencontre de la mécanique de précision et des paillettes.
