THE GEM
OF THE ISLE OF BEAUTY
In addition to breathtaking beaches, southern Corsica
offers landscapes both surprising and fascinating.
Forests, tall rocks, cliffs… a truly dazzling spectacle.
Each year, the beaches of southern Corsica receive the most flattering
compliments! In 2019, the highly-prized Palombaggia, a little paradise
of white sand and turquoise water south of Porto-Vecchio, tops the
Tripadvisor list of France’s most beautiful beaches and is ranked
among the loveliest in Europe.
Also heading the list, we find the Petit Sperone beach in Bonifacio,
that of Le Grand Sperone, boasting some of the finest and whitest
sand in France, and that of Capo di Feno, facing the Îles Sanguinaires
in the Gulf of Ajaccio. The fascinating shoreline is exemplified by
the steep, dizzying Bonifacio which has retained all the traces of its
Genoese past, Propriano surrounded by turquoise water, the creeks
of Piana listed as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage, and Cargèse, a
former Greek colony. The island’s interior is, however, also worth a
detour. Covered by forests on almost half of its surface area, Corsica
is the most densely wooded of all Mediterranean islands. Further away
from its coast, it reveals its deep soul, with old mills nestling in the hills
where herbs reign over the «maquis».
Far from the bustle down on the shore, magic casts its spell: Sartène
with its picturesque granite houses, Zonza at the foot of the sumptuous
Needles of Bavella, or Quenza, in the Alta Rocca region, with numerous
archeological sites, including the most visited, that of Cucuruzzu-
Capula.
