Pinuccio Lovero ha un sogno: fare il becchino. A quarant’anni
finalmente è stato assunto come custode del
cimitero di Mariotto, frazione di Bitonto, profondo
sud bollente. Nel mezzo di un’estate torrida, Pinuccio
Lovero aspetta il suo primo funerale. Perché, dal giorno
del suo arrivo cinque mesi fa, a Mariotto non è
ancora morto nessuno. Pinuccio smania, i paesani
esultano. Ma, prima o poi, qualcuno morirà. E
Pinuccio fiducioso aspetta, fermo davanti al cancello
del “suo” cimitero.

A midsummer death dream
Pinuccio Lovero has a dream: being a gravedigger. At the
age of forty he has finally been taken on, as an attendant
at the cemetery in Mariotto, a small town near Bitonto, in
the deep, hot South of Italy. In a torrid summer, Pinuccio
L o v e ro is still waiting for his first funeral service. Since
the day of his arrival, five months ago, no one has died
in Mariotto. Pinuccio yearns for his first death; his fellow
countrymen rejoice at this unusual situation, but, sooner
or later, someone has to die. And Pinuccio is waiting for
that day, hopefully, standing at the gate of “his” cemetery.

Il documentario riperc o r re la vita di Enrico Mattei, dal
1945 all’attentato che ne causò la morte nel 1962, leggendola
in filigrana rispetto agli eventi politici ed economici
che caratterizzarono lo scenario italiano ed internazionale
nel medesimo periodo. Attraverso le vicende di un indiscusso
protagonista di quell’epoca, la narrazione documenta
la stagione controversa e tuttavia esaltante della
modernizzazione, infrastrutturazione ed industrializzazione
dell’Italia dopo la fine della Seconda Guerra
Mondiale, che aprì la via al famoso “boom” degli anni ’60.

1945 to the staged accident that killed him in 1962, weaving
in the political and economic developments that characterised
the Italian and international scenes during the
period in question. T h rough the highlights of the career of
one of the major figures of the era, the narrative analyses
the controversial yet vigorous years following the Second
World Wa r, in which Italy modernised and industrialised
itself, building its infrastru c t u res and setting the stage for
the famous “boom” of the 60’s.
