which still stands within the historic centre, the
convention between Guelph and Ghibellines exiles
took place. The struggles in Florence between black
Guelphs on one side and white Guelphs and Ghibellines
on the other, brought to the expulsion of
the latter faction of the city, with a death sentence
in absentia for Dante issued in January of the same
year by the Podestà of Florence, Cante Gabrielli da
Gubbio. The Whites fled and Dante with them, who
found exile at his friends’, the Counts Guidi in Casentino.
Whites and Ghibellines, however, schemed
revenge and plotted their return to Florence: thus
the Convention at the choir of the Abbey of San Godenzo.
Substantially, the San Godenzo Convention
took place to set up an agreement among the noble
families exiled from Florence, with notarial deed
drawn up by the notary Ser Giovanni Buto d’Ampinana,
to financially guarantee the Ubaldini family,
lords of Mugello, should they undergo an attack by
Florence on their castle Castello di Montaccianico.
An evocative story with reliable historic sources
but allows for dreams and the thought that the
magic of these places was fundamental for the
birth of the most loved work of Italian literature.
“Dante Ghibellino” takes place every year to celebrate
the convention of San Godenzo, this year
fixed for Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July.

guelfi e ghibellini. Le lotte intestine a Firenze, fra
guelfi neri da una parte e guelfi bianchi e ghibellini
dall’altra, portarono alla cacciata di quest’ultima
fazione dalla città, con la condanna a morte
in contumacia di Dante, emessa nel gennaio dello
stesso anno dal podestà di Firenze, Cante Gabrielli
da Gubbio. I Bianchi fuggirono e con essi Dante,
che trovò asilo presso gli amici Conti Guidi in Casentino.
Bianchi e ghibellini, tuttavia, meditavano
vendetta e tramavano per ritornare in Firenze: da
qui il Convegno nel coro dell’Abbazia di San Godenzo.
Sostanzialmente il Convegno di San Godenzo
avvenne per stipulare un accordo fra le nobili famiglie
cacciate da Firenze, con tanto di rogito notarile
redatto dal notaio Ser Giovanni Buto d’Ampinana
per garantire economicamente gli Ubaldini, signori
del Mugello, qualora avessero subito un attacco
di Firenze nel loro Castello di Montaccianico.
Una storia suggestiva che ha basi storiche fondate,
ma che permette di sognare e pensare che la magia
di questi luoghi sia stata determinate per la
nascita dell’opera più amata della letteratura italiana.
Ogni anno per celebrare il convegno a San Godenzo
si svolge il “Dante Ghibellino” quest’anno
fissato per sabato 30 giugno e domenica 1 luglio.
