Effect of Selected Alloying Elements on Mechanical Properties of Pearlitic Nodular Cast Irons
Einfluss ausgewählter Legierungselemente auf die mechanischen Eigenschaften von perlitischem Gusseisen mit
Kugelgraphit
There is a continuous demand for low-cost nodular cast irons with improved mechanical properties, this being an
industrial requirement both for pearlitic as well as for ferritic grades. Developments in pearlitic nodular irons should lead
to alloys with higher and higher strength while retaining some ductility in the as-cast state so as to respond to demands
related to castings for high power automotive engines in competition with steel castings and ADI. According to these
aims, several alloying elements have been selected and added separately or combined to standard commercial nodular
cast irons. In all cases, only low-level additions were made and their effects on the microstructure and mechanical
properties at room temperature have been characterized and are discussed. A statistical analysis has been performed
on the data obtained that accounts for changes in alloying additions as well as for variations in process parameters.
The Effect of Partial Melting Homogenization on the Mechanical Properties of Thick Section
Austempered Ductile Iron Containing 2% Mn
Einfluss einer partiellen Schmelzehomogenisierung auf die mechanischen Eigenschaften von Austempered Ductile Iron
mit 2 % Mangan bei großer Wanddicke
Elements such as Mn and Mo may be added to ductile iron to improve its hardenability and mechanical properties, but
segregation of these elements could result in the reduction of mechanical properties and must therefore be considered
during the manufacturing of thick section ductile iron. In this research the microstructures of cast specimens
containing 2% Mn were studied by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that
manganese segregates in the intercellular areas while silicon segregates in the regions around graphite nodules. Partial
Melting Homogenization (PMH) was carried out on the samples to reduce segregation. Analysis of the results showed
that homogenization has been done successfully and segregation in the ductile iron matrix was significantly reduced.
The successful effect of homogenization was also studied on austempered samples. PMH prior to austempering resulted
in a very uniform bainitic microstructure. Tensile tests were carried out on the samples which showed improved
mechanical properties due to combined PMH process and austempering process.
