High Temperature Erosion Behaviors of High V-Cr-Ni Spheroidal Carbides Cast Iron<br />

High temperature erosion occurs in production of the inorganic fibrous insulator in plant. Austenitic and martensitic<br />
stainless steels are often used for these severe high temperature erosion conditions. The paper presents erosion<br />
properties of some stainless steels, several cast iron and cast steel using a blast type high temperature erosion furnace.<br />
The solid particle erosion behavior at high temperatures (900 deg C) of carbon steel of S50C, carbon tool steel of SK3,<br />
SUS403, SUS630, and High V-Cr-Ni spheroidal carbides cast iron (SCI-VCrNi) are investigated. Alumina balls entrained<br />
in a stream of hot air impact on the target materials at an air velocity of 100 m/s. the impingement angle is 90 deg. The<br />
influence of the test temperature and the material removal are discussed. The high temperature erosion behaviors of<br />
specimens are discussed by the eroded surface morphology and vertical section observation using SEM and optical<br />
microscopy observations.<br />

Achieving the desired mechanical properties in thin wall ductile iron castings poured in industrial production foundries is<br />
a challenge. In this work, the effect of copper addition (up to 0.74%) and melt processing (Ba based stream inoculation)<br />
on the matrix structure, mechanical properties and fracture behaviour of ductile iron castings with varying section<br />
thickness (4-16 mm) were investigated in a regular jobbing foundry. It was possible to obtain 80% pearlitic structure<br />
without carbides in 4 mm sections, giving a tensile strength of 658 MPa with 2.5% ductility and 264 Brinell hardness.<br />
The solidification behaviour represented by the cooling curves helped in checking the effectiveness of the melt<br />
treatment by observing the amount of un<strong>der</strong>cooling. Fractography studies of tensile specimens showed the change in<br />
fracture mechanisms due to increase in copper content on fracture paths. The increased amount of pearlite in the<br />
matrix exhibited brittle fracture with river pattern.<br />
