New 1.7 to 2.2 GHz
Digital Phase Shifter
Richardson RFPD announced
the availability and full design
support capabilities for a new
digital phase shifter from Peregrine
Semiconductor Corporation.
The PE44820 is a HaRP
technology-enhanced 8-bit
digital phase shifter (DPS) that
covers a phase range of 358.6
degrees in 1.4 degree steps,
maintaining excellent phase
and amplitude accuracy across
the nominal frequency band of
1.7 to 2.2 GHz. The PE44820
is also capable of extended frequency
operation from 1.1 to
3 GHz for narrow band applications.
It is manufactured on
Peregrine’s UltraCMOS process,
a patented variation of siliconon-insulator
(SOI) technology
on a sapphire substrate, offering
the performance of GaAs with
the economy and integration of
conventional CMOS. The new
DPS features an integrated digital
control interface that supports
both serial and parallel programming
of the phase setting,
as well as an external negative
supply option for a faster switching
frequency. In addition,
no external blocking capacitors
are required if 0 V DC is present
on the RF ports. The PE44820
is offered in a 32-lead 5 x 5 x
0.85 mm QFN package and is
designed for use in a broad range
of applications, including beamforming
networks, distributed
antenna systems, active antenna
systems, and phased array.
According to Peregrine, additional
key features of the PE44820
include:
• 8-bit full-range phase shifter of
358.6° (180°, 90°, 45°, 22.5°,
11.2°, 5.6°, 2.8° and 1.4° bits)
• RMS phase error: 1.0°
• RMS amplitude error: 0.1 dB
• linearity: +60 dBm IIP3
• operating temperature:
+105 °C
Low-Loss 456-MHz
SAW Filter for IF
Circuits
RFMW Ltd. announced design
and sales support for Qorvo’s
857271 SAW filter for 3G/4G
infrastructure intermediate frequency
(IF) circuits. Insertion
loss of the 857271 is only 11 dB,
nearly half the loss of similar
performance SAW filter options.
With a usable bandwidth of
39,6 MHz, the 857271 also supports
general purpose wireless
applications where low EVM
(3%) is desirable. Intended for
Unique
Through-Hole Style
Module
Nordic an nounced that a thirdparty
open source module supplied
in a specially-developed
16-pin through-hold DIP style
package is said to allow Bluetooth
Smart and 2.4 GHz proprietary
wireless prototypes
using Nordic chips to be built
without soldering because the
module plugs straight into any
standard bread board used by
makers and hobbyists.
OSHChip (OSH standing for
Open Source Hardware) from
U.S. maker and hobbyist startup
of the same name, employs
a Nordic nRF51822 Systemon-Chip
(SoC) and in addition
to eliminating the need for
soldering, its 1,98 x 0,89 cm
(0,78 x 0,35 inch) form factor
is said to be less than 5 percent
the size of an Arduino UNO or
22 percent the size of an Arduino
Nano.
„Size is another major motivation
behind this module
because at present almost all
maker wireless boards are so
big they typically cover up all
the holes on the bread board
below and so leave no space
to plug in wires or other peripherals,“
comments OSHChip
founder, Philip Freidin. „All of
this adds time, complexity, and
hassle to a project and hinders
balanced input and output operation,
Qorvo offers this filter
in a RoHS compliant, ceramic
SMT package.
1 W Ka-Band PA
RFMW Ltd. announced design
and sales support for a 1 watt
power amplifier from Qorvo. The
TGA4537-SM operates from 29
to 35 GHz with an integrated
power detector for power monitoring.
Requiring no additional
matching components, the Qorvo
TGA4537-SM serves point-topoint
radio and Ka-band satellite
applications with 18 dB of
the ability to quickly develop
and play about with a design.“
To develop OSHChip Freidin
had to develop his own IC-style
pins that would be compatible
with the vast majority of offthe-shelf
bread boards. Freidin
also says that were it not for the
Nordic nRF51822‘s chip-scale
package option he wouldn‘t
have been able to fit his module
into such a small form-factor.
OSHChip can be programmed
and de-bugged (Keil) from a
partner OSHChip programmer
board that supports USB dragand-drop
programming, SWD
debugging, and bi-direction
serial communications. Freidin
says he plans to make the
entire OSHChip module open
source (including sharing its
schematics, Gerber file, and
BOM). He adds that over-theair
programming functionality
and sample apps for iPhone and
Android will also be added in
the near future.
