in politics.
We must finally realize that climate
protection, nature conservation and
environmental protection are synonymous
with the protection of
humankind. Our society can only
function if it has reliable livelihoods.
Only then are we stress-free
enough to live cooperatively with
each other. A society cannot withstand
permanent stress. Therefore,
we have to become more constructive
in climate communication. We
have to strike a balance between explaining
blatant truths on the one
hand and presenting measures
that are still effective and give us a
chance to at least stabilize the climate
at the current level.
Do you see this communication
as the task of film students
as well?
Absolutely. Everyone who has a
half-decent command of a communicative
medium should now accept
it as their task to communicate this
extreme crisis. And they should do
so in such a way that they understand
the urgency, but at the same
time also say: I take responsibility
for this. Of course, I also know
that we cannot do this as individuals.
It can only be done by society as
a whole coming together. We have
to spread the responsibility onto as
many shoulders as possible.
Unfortunately, it‘s a very mixed bag.
There are good people in politics
who understand what is at stake.
But that is unfortunately a minority.
I‘ve seen politicians change an
agenda and leave a meeting after
their own input so that they don‘t
have to deal with climate science.
Sadly, you come across such avoidance
strategies in almost all parties.
Of course, we also know how some
media are manipulated or steered
by interest groups.
The Filmakademie could potentially
have a big impact here. But there
has to be a willingness to take on
this responsibility now and to use
all available resources to do so. It
doesn‘t have to be a perfect product
with a three- or four-year production
time. The urgency is so high
that we have to constantly address
the issue now, with this mixture
of reality and drive. We have to set
the accents ourselves. We have to
keep bringing the issue out into the
open and not wait until conservative
or right-wing groups have published
something again to which we
have to react. We have to go out in
front with the truth and reality ourselves.
I very much hope that the
students and also the teachers at the
Filmakademie will take up this immensely
important task now.
You are also part of expert
committees. Do you have the
impression that the problem
is understood by decision-makers
in politics and economics?
So is there any hope
that appropriate action will
be taken now?
