GLAVNI DOSE@KI V LETU <strong>2005</strong><br />

- V okviru bilateralnega sodelovanja s prof.<br />

Glassom iz Velike Britanije in sodelavci iz<br />

Politehnike Nova Gorica smo izvedli {tudijo,<br />

v kateri smo uporabili metodi XANES in<br />

EXAFS, da bi pridobili informacijo o molekularni<br />

obliki arzena v vzorcih odpadkov iz<br />

kalcinacije arzenove rude v neposredni bli`ini<br />

`galnih pe~i v Cornwallu in s tem povezano<br />

potencialno nevarnost za okolje. Dokazali<br />

smo, da je mobilnost arzena veliko ve~ja kot<br />

se je doslej domnevalo, saj medatomske<br />

razdalje med As-Fe in As-Al ter koordinacijska<br />

{tevila ka`ejo, da je arzenat v prsti s teh<br />

odlagali{~ prisoten tako v obliki amorfnih ali<br />

slabo kristaliziranih `elezovih hidroksidov<br />

(najverjetneje FeAsO ) kot tudi adsorbiran na<br />

aluminijeve okside in/ali hidrokside ter<br />

alumosilikate kot je npr. glina.<br />

- Razvili smo teoreti~ni model za izra~un<br />

maksimalne ekstraktibilnosti kovin iz prsti ali<br />

sedimentov za dolo~eno raztopino (ekstraktant),<br />

ki je osnovan na predpostavki veljavnosti<br />

Langmuirjeve izoterme. Uporabnost<br />

IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS IN <strong>2005</strong><br />

- In the framework of a bilateral cooperation<br />

with Prof. Glass (UK) and in collaboration<br />

with Nova Gorica Polytechnic, the x-ray absorption<br />

spectroscopic methods XANES and<br />

EXAFS were used to retrieve arsenic molecular<br />

information in the soil from a calciner’s<br />

residue dump (Cornwall, UK) to get insight<br />

in the normally assumed relative safety of<br />

such dump sites. It could be proven that the<br />

mobility of arsenic may be much higher than<br />

expected based on As-Fe and As-Al distances<br />

and coordination numbers which strongly<br />

suggest that arsenate in the soil is present in<br />

two forms, viz. as amorphous or poorly crystalline<br />

hydrous oxides of Fe (most likely<br />

FeAsO ) and adsorbed on aluminium (hydr)o-<br />

xides or aluminosilicates such as clay.<br />

- A theoretical model was developed for retrieval<br />

of the maximal extractability of metals<br />

from soil or sediment for a user-defined<br />

extractant, based on assumption of a<br />

Langmuir isotherm. The applicability of the<br />

model was illustrated by determining the<br />

chemical availability of seven metals in NIST<br />
