system. The process as a whole excluded the <strong>production</strong> facility except for rapid<br />

prototyping which is also another converted format from the CAD. Even the<br />

presentations to the customers were performed through realistic renderings <strong>of</strong> the<br />

spotlight.<br />

The company has not started <strong>production</strong> yet <strong>and</strong> this does not seem possible<br />

unless they have a batch type order from one <strong>of</strong> the customers. Only then the<br />

company will start to reconsider its in-house facilities <strong>and</strong> decide on whether<br />

producing it within the workshop or order <strong>production</strong> from outside.<br />

4.2.2. Fashion Design: Customized Trainers through Computer Models<br />

Adidas, being one <strong>of</strong> the most popular sportswear company, has recently initiated<br />

a project called “Mi Adidas” to produce customized trainers for consumers<br />

(introduced in 2002 on a wide scale). This customization <strong>and</strong> orders can only be<br />

performed in specialized Adidas shops all over the world because the<br />

consumption process is quite different than buying st<strong>and</strong>ard mass produced<br />

shoes.<br />

The <strong>of</strong>ficial website <strong>of</strong> Adidas explains the customization process in three steps.<br />

In the first step, the customers’ feet are scanned via a foot-scanning system to<br />

determine the exact length, width <strong>of</strong> each foot. The uniqueness <strong>of</strong> each foot,<br />

whether one <strong>of</strong> them is bigger than the other, is transformed into computable data<br />

for the best-fitting trainers. As a second step, another computer integrated system<br />

determines the pressure distribution <strong>of</strong> each foot to find out what performance<br />

features you need. All these results are reviewed by experts after the data is<br />
