losophy transformed them, but found <strong>in</strong> them little<br />

<strong>in</strong>spiration.<br />

How could a religion, of which neither the theology<br />

nor the ethics was really new, stir up at the same time<br />

so much hostility and fervor among the <strong>Roman</strong>s?<br />

To many m<strong>in</strong>ds of to-day theology and ethics con<br />

stitute religion, but dur<strong>in</strong>g the classical period it was<br />

different, and the priests of Isis and Serapis conquered<br />

souls ma<strong>in</strong>ly by other means. <strong>The</strong>y seduced them by<br />

the powerful attraction of the ritual and reta<strong>in</strong>ed them<br />

by the marvelous promises of their doctr<strong>in</strong>e of immor<br />

tality.<br />

To the Egyptians ritual had a value far superior to<br />

that we ascribe to it to-day. It had an operative<br />

strength of its own that was <strong>in</strong>dependent of the <strong>in</strong><br />

tentions of the officiat<strong>in</strong>g priest. <strong>The</strong> efficacy of prayer<br />

depended not on the <strong>in</strong>ner disposition of the believer,<br />

but on the correctness of the words, gestures and <strong>in</strong><br />

tonation. Religion was not clearly differentiated from<br />

magic. If a div<strong>in</strong>ity was <strong>in</strong>voked accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

correct forms, especially if one knew how to pronounce<br />

its real name, it was compelled to act <strong>in</strong> conformity<br />

to the will of its priest. <strong>The</strong> sacred words were an<br />

<strong>in</strong>cantation that compelled the superior powers to obey<br />

the officiat<strong>in</strong>g person, no matter what purpose he had<br />

<strong>in</strong> view. With the knowledge of the liturgy men ac<br />

quired an immense power over the world of spirits.<br />

Porphyry was surprised and <strong>in</strong>dignant because the<br />

Egyptians sometimes dared to threaten the gods <strong>in</strong><br />
