one that had been practised <strong>in</strong> the temple of the Pala<br />

In the <strong>in</strong>scriptions of the fourth century, Attis bears<br />

the cognomen of menotyrannus. At that time this name<br />

was undoubtedly<br />

understood to mean &quot;lord of the<br />

months,&quot; because Attis represented the sun who en<br />

tered a new sign of the zodiac every month. 2 s But<br />

that was not the orig<strong>in</strong>al mean<strong>in</strong>g of the term. &quot;Men<br />

tyrannus&quot; appears with quite a different mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

many <strong>in</strong>scriptions found <strong>in</strong> Asia M<strong>in</strong>or. Tyrannos*<br />

&quot;lord,&quot; is a word taken by the Greeks from the Lydian,<br />

and the honorable title of &quot;tyrant&quot; was given to Men,<br />

an old barbarian div<strong>in</strong>ity worshiped by all Phrygia and<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g regions. 26 <strong>The</strong> Anatolian tribes from<br />

Caria to the remotest mounta<strong>in</strong>s of Pontus worshiped<br />

a lunar god under that name who was supposed to rule<br />

not only the heavens but also the underworld, because<br />

the moon was frequently brought <strong>in</strong>to connection with<br />

the somber k<strong>in</strong>gdom of the dead. <strong>The</strong> growth of<br />

plants and the <strong>in</strong>crease of cattle and poultry were<br />

ascribed to his celestial <strong>in</strong>fluence, and the villagers<br />

<strong>in</strong>voked his protection for their farms and their dis<br />

trict. <strong>The</strong>y also placed their rural burial grounds under<br />

the safeguard of this k<strong>in</strong>g of shadows. No god enjoyed<br />

greater popularity <strong>in</strong> the country districts.<br />

This powerful div<strong>in</strong>ity penetrated <strong>in</strong>to Greece at an<br />

early period. Among the mixed populations of the<br />

^Egean seaports, <strong>in</strong> the Piraeus, at Rhodes, Delos and<br />

Thasos, religious associations for his worship were
