driv<strong>in</strong>g out the evil spirits that had caused pollution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> votary, aga<strong>in</strong>, might dr<strong>in</strong>k or bespr<strong>in</strong>kle himself<br />

with the blood of a slaughtered victim or of the priests<br />

themselves, <strong>in</strong> which case the prevail<strong>in</strong>g idea was that<br />

the liquid circulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the ve<strong>in</strong>s was a vivify<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong><br />

ciple capable of impart<strong>in</strong>g a new existence. 25 <strong>The</strong>se<br />

and similar rites 26 used <strong>in</strong> the mysteries were supposed<br />

to regenerate the <strong>in</strong>itated person and to restore him to<br />

an immaculate and <strong>in</strong>corruptible life. 2 ?<br />

Purgation of the soul was not effected solely by<br />

liturgic acts but also by self-denial and suffer<strong>in</strong>g. 28<br />

<strong>The</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g of the term expiatio changed. Expiation,<br />

or atonement, was no longer accomplished by the exact<br />

performance of certa<strong>in</strong> ceremonies pleas<strong>in</strong>g to the gods<br />

and required by a sacred code like a penalty for dam<br />

ages, but by privation and personal suffer<strong>in</strong>g. Ab<br />

st<strong>in</strong>ence, which prevented the <strong>in</strong>troduction of deadly<br />

elements <strong>in</strong>to the system, and chastity, which preserved<br />

man from pollution and debility, became means of<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g rid of the dom<strong>in</strong>ation of the evil powers and of<br />

rega<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g heavenly<br />

2^ favor. Macerations, laborious<br />

pilgrimages, public confessions, sometimes flagellations<br />

and mutilations, <strong>in</strong> fact all forms of penance and morti<br />

fications uplifted the fallen man and brought him<br />

nearer to the gods. In Phrygia a s<strong>in</strong>ner would write<br />

his s<strong>in</strong> and the punishment he suffered upon a stela for<br />

every one to see and would return thanks to heaven<br />

that his prayer of repentance had been heard. 30 <strong>The</strong><br />

Syrian, who had offended his goddess by eat<strong>in</strong>g her<br />

sacred fish, dressed <strong>in</strong> sordid rags, covered himself with<br />

a sack and sat <strong>in</strong> the public highway humbly to pro<br />

claim his misdeed <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> forgiveness.^ 1
