of the gods. <strong>The</strong>re they live forever among the eternal<br />

stars, freed from the tyranny of dest<strong>in</strong>y and even from<br />

the limitations of time.<br />

This alliance of the theorems of astronomy with<br />

their old beliefs supplied the Chaldeans with answers<br />

to all the questions that men asked concern<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

relation of heaven and earth, the nature of God, the<br />

existence of the world, and their own dest<strong>in</strong>y. Astrol<br />

ogy was really the first scientific theology. Hellenistic<br />

logic arranged the <strong>Oriental</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>es properly, com<br />

b<strong>in</strong>ed them with the Stoic philosophy and built them<br />

up <strong>in</strong>to a system of <strong>in</strong>diputable grandeur, an ideal<br />

reconstruction of the universe, the powerful assurance<br />

of which <strong>in</strong>spired Manilius to sublime language when<br />

he was not exhausted by his efforts to master an ill-<br />

adapted theme.4 1 <strong>The</strong> vague and irrational notion of<br />

&quot;sympathy&quot; is transformed <strong>in</strong>to a deep<br />

sense of the<br />

relationship between the human soul, an igneous sub<br />

stance, and the div<strong>in</strong>e stars, and this feel<strong>in</strong>g is strength<br />

ened by thought.* 2 <strong>The</strong> contemplation of the sky has<br />

become a communion. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the splendor of night<br />

the m<strong>in</strong>d of man became <strong>in</strong>toxicated with the light<br />

stream<strong>in</strong>g from above; born on the w<strong>in</strong>gs of enthu<br />

siasm, he ascended <strong>in</strong>to the sacred choir of the stars<br />

and took part <strong>in</strong> their harmonious movements. &quot;He<br />
