Asiatic culture slowly supplant<strong>in</strong>g that of Italy. <strong>The</strong><br />

latter developed only by absorb<strong>in</strong>g elements taken from<br />

the <strong>in</strong>exhaustible reserves of the &quot;old civilizations&quot; of<br />

which we spoke at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> Hellenized<br />

Orient imposed itself everywhere through its men and<br />

its works; it subjected its Lat<strong>in</strong> conquerors to its as<br />

<strong>in</strong> the same manner as it dom<strong>in</strong>ated its Ara<br />

cendancy<br />

Islam. But <strong>in</strong> no field of thought was its <strong>in</strong>fluence,<br />

under the empire, so decisive as <strong>in</strong> religion, because it<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>vasion of the barbarian religions was so open,<br />

so noisy and so triumphant that it could not rema<strong>in</strong><br />

unnoticed. It attracted the anxious or sympathetic<br />

attention of the ancient authors, and s<strong>in</strong>ce the Renais<br />

sance modern scholars have frequently taken <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

<strong>in</strong> it. Possibly however they did not sufficiently under<br />

stand that this religious evolution was not an isolated<br />

and extraord<strong>in</strong>ary phenomenon, but that it accompanied<br />

and aided a more general evolution, just<br />

as that aided<br />

it <strong>in</strong> turn. <strong>The</strong> transformation of beliefs, was <strong>in</strong>timately<br />

connected with the establishment of the monarchy by<br />

div<strong>in</strong>e right, the development of art, the prevail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

philosophic tendencies, <strong>in</strong> fact with all the manifesta<br />

tions of thought, sentiment and taste.<br />

We shall attempt to sketch this religious movement<br />

with its numerous and far-reach<strong>in</strong>g ramifications. First<br />

we shall try to show what caused the diffusion of the<br />

<strong>Oriental</strong> religions. In the second place we shall ex<br />

am<strong>in</strong>e those <strong>in</strong> particular that orig<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> Asia M<strong>in</strong>or,<br />

Egypt, Syria and Persia, and we shall endeavor to dis-
