founded loyalty with piety.<br />

As we see, the researches <strong>in</strong>to the doctr<strong>in</strong>es or prac<br />

tices common to Christianity and the <strong>Oriental</strong> mys<br />

teries lead almost always beyond the limits of the<br />

<strong>Roman</strong> empire <strong>in</strong>to the Hellenistic Orient. <strong>The</strong> re<br />

ligious conceptions which imposed themselves on Lat<strong>in</strong><br />

Europe under the Caesars8 were developed there, and<br />

it is there we must look for the key to enigmas still<br />

unsolved. It is true that at present noth<strong>in</strong>g is more<br />

obscure than the history of the religions that arose <strong>in</strong><br />

Asia when Greek culture came <strong>in</strong> contact with bar<br />

barian theology. It is rarely possible to formulate satis<br />

factory conclusions with any degree of certa<strong>in</strong>ty, and<br />

before further discoveries are made we shall frequently<br />

be compelled to weigh contrast<strong>in</strong>g probabilities. We<br />

must frequently throw out the sound<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

shift<strong>in</strong>g sea of possibility <strong>in</strong> order to f<strong>in</strong>d secure anchor<br />

age. But at any rate we perceive with sufficient dis<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ctness the direction <strong>in</strong> which the <strong>in</strong>vestigations must<br />

be pursued.<br />

It is our belief that the ma<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t to be cleared<br />

up is the composite religion of those Jewish or Jewishpagan<br />

communities, the worshipers of Hypsistos, the<br />

Sabbatists, the Sabaziasts and others <strong>in</strong> which the new<br />

creed took root dur<strong>in</strong>g the apostolic age. In those<br />

communities the Mosaic law had become adapted to<br />

the sacred usages of the Gentiles even before the be<br />

g<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of our era, and monotheism had made con<br />

cessions to idolatry. Many beliefs of the ancient Orient,<br />

as for <strong>in</strong>stance the ideas of Persian dualism regard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>in</strong>fernal world, arrived <strong>in</strong> Europe by two roads, the<br />

more or less orthodox Judaism of the communities of
