of the entire human race the Baals ga<strong>in</strong>ed proselytes ^^<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Occident, and their temples witnessed gather<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of devotees of every race and nationality. In this<br />

respect the Baals were dist<strong>in</strong>ctly different from Je<br />

hovah.<br />

<strong>The</strong> essence of paganism implies that the nature of<br />

a div<strong>in</strong>ity broadens as the number of its votaries <strong>in</strong>- \/<br />

creases. Everybody credits it with some new quality,<br />

and its character becomes more complex. As it ga<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong> power it also has a tendency to dom<strong>in</strong>ate its com-<br />

panion gods and to concentrate their functions <strong>in</strong> itself.<br />

To escape this threaten<strong>in</strong>g absorption, these gods must<br />

be of a very sharply def<strong>in</strong>ed personality and of a very<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al character. <strong>The</strong> vague Semitic deities, how<br />

ever, were devoid of a well-def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>dividuality. We<br />

fail to f<strong>in</strong>d among them a well organized society of<br />

immortals, like that of the Greek Olympus where each<br />

div<strong>in</strong>ity had its own features and its own particular
