<strong>The</strong> religion of Phrygia was perhaps even more vio-<br />

lent than that of Thrace. <strong>The</strong> climate of the Anatolian<br />

uplands is one of extremes. Its w<strong>in</strong>ters are rough,<br />

long and cold, the spr<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>in</strong>s suddenly develop a<br />

vigorous vegetation that is scorched by the hot sum<br />

mer sun. <strong>The</strong> abrupt contrasts of a nature generous<br />

and sterile, radiant and bleak <strong>in</strong> turn, caused excesses<br />

of sadness and joy that were unknown <strong>in</strong> temperate<br />

and smil<strong>in</strong>g regions, where the ground was never bur<br />

ied under snow nor scorched by the sun. <strong>The</strong> Phryg<br />

ians mourned the long agony and death of the vege<br />

tation, but when the verdure reappeared <strong>in</strong> March they<br />

surrendered to the excitement of a tumultuous joy.<br />

In Asia savage rites that had been unknown <strong>in</strong> Thrace<br />

or practiced <strong>in</strong> milder form expressed the vehemence<br />

of those oppos<strong>in</strong>g feel<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

In the midst of their or<br />

gies, and after wild dances, some of the worshipers<br />

voluntarily wounded themselves and, becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>toxi<br />

cated with the view of the blood, with which they be<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>kled their altars, they believed they were unit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

themselves with their div<strong>in</strong>ity. Or else, arriv<strong>in</strong>g at a<br />

paroxysm of frenzy, they sacrificed their virility to the<br />

gods as certa<strong>in</strong> Russian dissenters still do to-day. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

men became priests of Cybele and were called Galli.<br />

Violent ecstasis was always an endemic disease <strong>in</strong><br />

Phrygia. As late as the Anton<strong>in</strong>es, montanist proph<br />

ets that arose <strong>in</strong> that country attempted to <strong>in</strong>troduce it<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Christianity.<br />

All these excessive and degrad<strong>in</strong>g demonstrations<br />

of an extreme worship must not cause us to slight the<br />

power of the feel<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong>spired<br />

it. <strong>The</strong> sacred<br />

ecstasy, the voluntary mutilations and the eagerly<br />

sought suffer<strong>in</strong>gs manifested an ardent long<strong>in</strong>g for
