superstitious forms. But how many second century<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ds shared Lucian s skepticism <strong>in</strong> regard to the dog<br />

matic systems ! <strong>The</strong> various sects were right<strong>in</strong>g each<br />

other for ever so long without conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g one another<br />

of their alleged error. <strong>The</strong> satirist of Samosata en<br />

joyed oppos<strong>in</strong>g their exclusive pretensions<br />

while he<br />

himself recl<strong>in</strong>ed on the &quot;soft pillow of doubt.&quot; But<br />

only <strong>in</strong>telligent m<strong>in</strong>ds could delight<br />

<strong>in</strong> doubt or sur<br />

render to it ; the masses wanted certa<strong>in</strong>ties. <strong>The</strong>re was<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g to revive confidence <strong>in</strong> the power of a decrepit<br />

and threadbare science. No great discovery trans<br />

formed the conception of the universe. Nature no<br />

longer betrayed her secrets, the earth rema<strong>in</strong>ed unex<br />

plored and the past <strong>in</strong>scrutable. Every branch of<br />

knowledge was forgotten. <strong>The</strong> world cursed with<br />

sterility, could but repeat itself; it had the poignant<br />

appreciation of its own decay and impotence. Tired<br />

of fruitless researches, the m<strong>in</strong>d surrendered to the<br />

necessity of believ<strong>in</strong>g. S<strong>in</strong>ce the <strong>in</strong>tellect was unable<br />

to formulate a consistent rule of life faith alone could<br />

supply it, and the multitudes gravitated toward the<br />

temples, where the truths taught to man <strong>in</strong> earlier<br />

days by the <strong>Oriental</strong> gods were revealed. <strong>The</strong> stanch<br />

adherence of past, generations to beliefs and rites of<br />

unlimited antiquity seemed to guarantee their truth and<br />

efficacy. This current was so strong that philosophy<br />

itself was swept toward mysticism and the neo-Platonist<br />

school became a theurgy.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Oriental</strong> mysteries, then, could stir the soul by<br />

and enthusiasm <strong>in</strong><br />

\ arous<strong>in</strong>g admiration and terror, pity<br />

turn. <strong>The</strong>y gave<br />

the <strong>in</strong>tellect the illusion of learned<br />

depth and absolute certa<strong>in</strong>ty and f<strong>in</strong>ally our third
