Physical presence Oil and gas
infrastructure
B ‐ 12
General waste Onshore disposal of solid
waste e.g. bin bags, scrap
metal, plastics etc.
Physical presence of subsea
infrastructure e.g. pipeline,
well, etc. Apart from minor
topside modifications the
surface infrastructure will not
change as a result of the
development
Impacts associated with onshore disposal are dependent on
the nature of the site or process. Landfills ‐ land take,
nuisance, emissions (methane), possible leachate, limitations
on future land use. Treatment plants ‐ nuisance, atmospheric
emissions, potential for contamination of sites.
Likelihood Consequence Risk
5 1 Low
May conflict with other users e.g. fishing, shipping. Attraction
of birds and fish shoals to the structure. Biofouling of
structure.
Balloch Field Development Environmental Statement
Maersk has a Company Policy to
minimise waste. Optimisation of
quantities of materials ordered.
Waste segregated by personnel at
source of generation and
manually handled to the
appropriate labelled waste
receptacle until transferred
ashore for disposal. Waste
Management Procedure is
implemented. Monthly reporting
of waste returned to shore.
Recycling and reuse of wastes as
defined by the Waste
Management Procedure.
Physical presence of subsea
infrastructure minimised through
design.
500m exclusion zone around the
FPSO to mitigate against collision
& hence prevent damage to
vessels and the FPSO platform.
The location is marked on charts.
Loss of small area (500m radius
around the FPSO) compared to
available fishing area. Protective
structures on pipeline etc. to
prevent interaction with fishing
gear.
Appendix B ‐ Environmental Assessment
None envisaged.
Balloch development will
not generate significant
volumes of general
waste.
Negligible impact.
