In addition to the management plan review, there have been frequent
suggestions to expand the sanctuary or to create one or two new ones in
adjacent waters used by the same populations of whales. These include
Jeffreys Ledge and Great South Channel. Most years on Stellwagen Bank,
the whales and dolphins divide much of their spring and summer feeding
time between the three areas, and in the summers, when the whales disappear
from Stellwagen Bank, they are sometimes found in these other areas.
