Meantime some of the settlers had found their particular<br />

patches of ground of poor quality, having cleared the trees<br />

to meet a hidden crop of stones. <strong>The</strong>y moved to fresh<br />

woods farther west. New settlers, too, were coming into<br />

the country, from Ireland and parts of Scotland, and other<br />

bands from <strong>Arran</strong>, particularly in the year 1831, when<br />

thirteen families arrived, to find things rather easier for them<br />

than they had been for the pioneers. By 1833 the <strong>Arran</strong><br />

settlement numbered some 222 souls, made up as follows : ^—<br />
