out southwards from Lamlash ; when Lamlash was still the<br />

island only, and the inner shore showed but rare huts of turf<br />

and stone amid clumps of hazel and birch.<br />

Vigleikr was in Hakon's expedition, and is mentioned as one of the leaders in the<br />

expeditions to Kintyre and Loch Lomond. ' In all probability Vigleikr cut the<br />

inscription in September 1263, when the Norwegian fleet was in Lamlash Bay. To<br />

conclude from the form of the runic letters and from the linguistic forms, the other<br />

inscriptions in the Cell of St. Molaise (except No. V.) may also date from the autumn<br />
