<strong>The</strong> King, having with the Lords of his Council inspected the evidences 20 Jac iv.<br />

produced by David, Bishop of Lismore, concerning certain lands of the *°'<br />

Abbey of Sagadull "svithin the domain of Kintire, which were granted in<br />

pure almoigne, confirmed by the Kings Alexander, Robert, David, &<br />

Robert, viz. :— (1) Charter of Ranald MacSorlet who called himself King<br />

of the Isles, Lord of Ergile and Kintire, founder of the said monastery,<br />

—of the lands of GlensagaduU and of 12 marcates of Battebeam in the said<br />

domain : (2) another charter of the same,—of 20 mark lands of Ceskene<br />

in the island of <strong>Arran</strong> : (3) . . .<br />

... (8) Charter of Duncajti Campbele of Lochquhou,—of one oblate of<br />

land called Barrandayb & Blaimatibrade, in the domain of Knapdale :<br />

and because the said abbey has been joined by the Pope with the Bishopric<br />

of Lismore, therefore (the King) as Tutor and Governor of James Prince<br />

of Scotland and of the Isles, has, for renewal of the said evidences and<br />

strengthening of the said union, and for special affection, ratified and<br />

admortized (granted in mortmain) to the said David Bishop of Lismore,<br />

and his successors, the aforesaid evidences, and incorporated the afore-<br />

written lands in a free barony of Sagadull, with the power of building<br />

castles, towers, and fortresses within the said lands for the custody thereof.<br />

<strong>The</strong> King, recalhng the many and excellent services rendered to himself 19 Car. i.<br />

and to his forebears by James Marquis of Hammiltoun, Earl of <strong>Arran</strong> and<br />

Cambridge, Lord of Aven and Innerdale, and his ancestors, in affairs of<br />

the greatest moment committed to their singular fidelity, not only within<br />

the realm of Scotland but also abroad,—and weighing and considering<br />

well that the said James belongs to the blood royal in close relationship,<br />

and from his earliest infancy has applied himself with the highest vigour<br />

and affection to promoting the service of the King, performing very many<br />

matters of state entrusted to him by the King, with extreme fidehty<br />

and industry, has created the said James—Duke of Hamilton, Marquis of<br />

Clidisdalia, Earl of <strong>Arran</strong>, and of Cambridge, Lord of Aven, and Innerdale,<br />

by giving to him and his heirs male of the body, failing whom, to William<br />

Earl of Lanark, his brother, the King's Secretary, and his heirs male of the<br />

body, failing whom, to the oldest heir female of the body of the said James,<br />

without division, and to her heirs male of the body, bearing the name and<br />
