(Sunday excepted) at half-past two, calling at Brodick.<br />

Brodick and Lamlash Post Offices are sub-offices to Saltcoats.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is another side to the 'improvement.' It meant<br />

rather fewer people ; curiously, too, it was followed by an<br />

increase of pauperism. Not that there was waste : it is<br />

hard to see what could be wasted. ' No people,' writes<br />

Dr. M'Naughton in 1837-40, ' can be more frugal than the<br />

natives of the parish (Kilbride). <strong>The</strong>y live upon the humblest<br />

fare ; potatoes are with the majority of them the staff of<br />

life ; and animal food is a luxury in which they rarely in-<br />

dulge.' From Kilmorie the account is rather more rosy :<br />

' Absolute destitution,' it is remarked, 'is a thing unknown<br />

among the very poorest.' ^ But then, like other Highland<br />

communities, <strong>Arran</strong> was distinguished by its mutual helpful-<br />

ness. ' <strong>The</strong> farmers,' writes Lord Teignmouth about the<br />

same date, ' though in poor circumstances, never suffer distress,<br />

as they are much inclined to afford each other mutual<br />

assistance and support.' <strong>The</strong> Duke, too, maintained a few<br />
