o There was an increase in the number of legal consultations provided by the unit<br />

5.2) Participation in Training Activities Organized by PCHR<br />
The unit contributed to seven training courses organized by PCHR. Staff members of<br />
the unit delivered lectures on legal rights and the concept of the rule of law.<br />
5.3) Organizing Workshop<br />
In 2005, the unit organized three workshops on the impacts of amendments to the<br />
Judicial Authority Law on the independence of the judiciary. A number of judges and<br />
interested people participated in these workshops. The first two workshops were held<br />
at PCHR's office in Gaza City on 13 February and 10 October 2005 respectively, and<br />
the third was held at Gaza International Hotel on 26 October 2005.<br />

6.1) Claims be<strong>for</strong>e National Judiciary in the USA and the UK<br />
In 2005, PCHR filed cases be<strong>for</strong>e the national judiciary in the USA and the UK to<br />
investigate and prosecute Israeli officials responsible <strong>for</strong> grave breaches of<br />
international humanitarian law in the OPT.<br />
US Judiciary<br />
• The unit filed a case against Caterpillar Inc. be<strong>for</strong>e the US judiciary, demanding<br />
compensation <strong>for</strong> the deaths of a number of people, which occurred when IOF<br />
demolished houses in the OPT.<br />
• The unit, in cooperation with the <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> Constitutional <strong>Rights</strong>, brought a class<br />
action lawsuit against Avi Dichter, the <strong>for</strong>mer Director of Israel’s General<br />
Security Service (GSS), on behalf of <strong>Palestinian</strong>s who had been killed or injured<br />
in a 2002 air strike in Gaza. The attack occurred just be<strong>for</strong>e midnight on 22 July<br />
2002, when the IOF dropped a one-ton bomb on al-Daraj, a residential<br />
neighborhood in Gaza City.<br />
