Workshop on the Juristic and Gender Approach of NGOs – Jordan<br />

On 4 and 5 February 2005, the Head of the Women's <strong>Rights</strong> Unit, Mona al-Shawa,<br />

participated in a workshop held in Amman on the juristic and gender approach of<br />

NGOs. The workshop, in which 14 <strong>Palestinian</strong> NGOs participated, was organized by<br />

the regional office of Amnesty International, in cooperation with the International<br />

Institute <strong>for</strong> Women's Solidarity. The workshop aimed at building the capacity of<br />

<strong>Palestinian</strong> NGOs in the field of incorporation of the juristic and gender approach in<br />

their activities. It was organized in the context of the International Campaign against<br />

Violence against Women launched by Amnesty International in March 2004.<br />

Discussion Group on National <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> Organizations in the Arab World –<br />

Egypt<br />

On 6 and 7 March 2005, Director of PCHR, Raji Sourani, participated in a discussion<br />

group on national human rights organizations in the Arab World, organized by the<br />

National Council <strong>for</strong> <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> and the UN Commission on <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong>, in<br />

cooperation with the Arab League of States and the Egyptian Foreign Ministry. The<br />

discussion group looked at the human rights situation in the Arab World and the role<br />

of national human rights organizations.<br />

UN International Meeting on Palestine – Geneva<br />

On 8 and 9 March 2005, Eoin Murray, Head of the International Unit, participated in<br />

meeting organized by the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable <strong>Rights</strong> of<br />

the <strong>Palestinian</strong> People. The meeting discussed the implementation of the Advisory<br />

Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice concerning the Annexation Wall,<br />

and the roles of governments and NGOs.<br />

International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security – Spain<br />

From 8 to 11 March 2005, the Director of PCHR, participated in the International<br />

Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security, which was held in Spain on the first<br />

anniversary of the terrorist attack on passenger trains in Spain. The summit sought to<br />

put together a joint agenda on how democratic societies can face terrorism. Sourani<br />

explained the <strong>Palestinian</strong> view on terrorism and its definition.<br />

Discussion Groups and Lectures in Spain<br />

From 8 to 12 March 2005, on invitation from al-Quds Association <strong>for</strong> Cooperation<br />

with the Arab World, PCHR attended a number of discussion groups and lectures that<br />

were held in celebration of International Women's Day in Spain. PCHR was<br />

represented by a non-staff member, Luna Abu Swaireh, due to the closure imposed on<br />

the Gaza Strip. Abu Swaireh delivered a number of lectures on the activities of<br />

PCHR’s Women and Children’s <strong>Rights</strong> Unit. She also explained the suffering of<br />
