In the context of cooperation between PCHR and Amnesty International, Donatella<br />

Rovera, from Amnesty International, met with the unit staff members on 27 April<br />

2005. The meeting discussed a number of issues, including Amnesty International’s<br />

report and Sharia’ courts, be<strong>for</strong>e a meeting with Sheikh Tayseer al-Tamimi, Chief<br />

Judge of the Sharia’ Courts.<br />

Kvinna Till Kvinna, Sweden<br />

The unit has a partnership relation with the Swedish NGO Kvinna Till Kvinna, which<br />

assists women in times of conflicts. The unit cooperated with the Swedish<br />

organization in a joint project in 2002 and 2004. In 2005, the unit cooperated with<br />

Kvinna Till Kvinna in a joint project to raise the legal awareness of women on the<br />

issue of violence against women (see above).<br />

On 16 and 17 March 2005, Agnitha Hegel, a representative from Kvinna Till Kvinna<br />

in Jerusalem, visited PCHR. The unit arranged a visit <strong>for</strong> her to the Sharia’ Court.<br />

She met with Sheikh Maher Khudair, Head of the Sharia’ Appeal Court. The unit<br />

also arranged a meeting <strong>for</strong> her with Sheikh Tayseer al-Tamimi, Chief Judge of<br />

Sharia’ Courts in Jerusalem. The unit sought to brief delegates of the organization<br />

who visited the Gaza Strip on Israeli violations of human rights and organized field<br />

tours <strong>for</strong> them. On 16 June 2005, the unit, in coordination with the Field Work Unit,<br />

arranged a field tour <strong>for</strong> the organization’s delegates in Rafah, where they saw the<br />

demolished houses in the area.<br />

Regional Activities<br />

• On 4 and 5 March 2005, the unit head participated in a conference on rights and<br />

gender organised by <strong>Palestinian</strong> NGOs, which was held in Amman, in cooperation<br />

with the International Institute <strong>for</strong> Women’s Solidarity in Jordan.<br />

• On 28 and 29 June 2005, unit lawyer Hanan Matar participated in a consultative<br />

meeting in Cairo on the subject of violence against children, following an<br />

invitation from the Arab Council <strong>for</strong> Children and Development to attend<br />

The unit staff members participated in the campaign organized by PCHR, in<br />

cooperation with a number of civil society organizations, to monitor the <strong>Palestinian</strong><br />

presidential election, which were held on 9 January 2005.<br />
