1.1) Training Courses in Coordination with the <strong>Palestinian</strong> Ministry of Youth<br />

and Sports<br />

The unit organized 8 training courses, instead of 5 as set out in the annual plan, in<br />

coordination with the <strong>Palestinian</strong> Ministry of Youth and Sports throughout the Gaza<br />

Strip. The target group included members of the Ministry's youth committees, which<br />

include university students and members of youth centers and unions. The courses<br />

were held in the 5 districts of the Gaza Strip. The courses focused on human rights<br />

instruments, including: the International Declaration of <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong>; the<br />

International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural <strong>Rights</strong>; the International<br />

Covenant on Civil and Political <strong>Rights</strong>; the Convention on the <strong>Rights</strong> of the Child;<br />

CEDAW; and international humanitarian law, and issues relating to democracy and<br />

civil society, including: democratic practice; the rule of law; the independence of the<br />

judiciary; and the role of NGOs in protecting human rights.<br />

Following training, the trainees took the following initiatives:<br />

• Trainees made an initiative to organize 3 training courses in Gaza, Khan Yunis and<br />

Gaza.<br />

• Three trainees were involved in activities to raise awareness on human rights.<br />

• Many trainees participated in PCHR’s activities, such as the wall painting on the<br />

<strong>Palestinian</strong> Prisoners’ Day in Deir al-Balah.<br />

• A number of trainees in<strong>for</strong>med about human rights violations in their areas.<br />

• 29 trainees joined PCHR’s campaign to monitor the elections <strong>for</strong> the local council<br />

of Rafah; at least 120 were selected to join PCHR’s campaign to monitor the<br />

legislative elections on 25 January 2006; and at least 30 trainees worked as election<br />

observers <strong>for</strong> other NGOs in the Gaza Strip.
