Means of Verification<br />

o In 2005, the unit organized 98 lectures to raise the legal awareness of women.<br />

o 2,940 women attended these lectures.<br />

o 123 women referred to the unit <strong>for</strong> legal aid after having attended these lectures.<br />

o The unit provided 230 on-the-spot legal consultations to women during these<br />

lectures.<br />

o These lectures were organized in cooperation with 49 institutions throughout the<br />

Gaza Strip, including governmental organizations and women's centers at<br />

UNRWA.<br />

o 13 lectures were organized following invitations from 10 organizations: the<br />

Middle East Council of Churches; the Municipality of Khan Yunis; the Voice of<br />

the Society; Future Builders; al-Lud Female Preparatory School; Shafa Amru<br />

Secondary School; Deir Yassin School; Khan Yunis Secondary School A; and<br />

Khan Yunis Secondary School B.<br />

o The unit organized lectures at schools on the rights of women and children.<br />

o 40 lectures were organized in the context of a joint project with the Swedish<br />

Kvinna Till Kvinna in coordination with 29 local community organizations.<br />

2.2) Contribution to Training Courses Organized by PCHR’s Training Unit<br />

The unit contributed to 12 training courses on democracy and human rights and<br />

CEDAW organized by PCHR's Training Unit. During these courses, the unit<br />

supervised 24 training sessions on democracy and human rights. It also organized 3<br />

training courses, which included 20 training sessions, on CEDAW. In 2005, a<br />

number of training sessions were devoted to gender issues.<br />

2.3) Cooperation with the Media<br />

The unit firmly believes that the media plays a vitally important role in raising<br />

awareness of women and children’s legal rights in <strong>Palestinian</strong> society. Consequently,<br />

in 2005, the unit made ef<strong>for</strong>ts to further develop cooperation with the local media.<br />

Press Interviews<br />

1. On 17 February, the unit head was interviewed by journalist Mohammed<br />

Kuraizem on subject of women's work at banks.<br />

2. On 22 June, unit lawyers Hanan Matar and Sameer Hasaniya were interviewed by<br />

journalist Majida al-Balbissi, on the subject of child custody. The interview was<br />

published in the Arab Woman Magazine on 23 June 2005.<br />

3. On 21 July, unit lawyer Sameer Hasaniya was interviewed by Wa'el Banat from<br />

the Arab Woman Magazine on the issue of community violence against widows of<br />

men killed during the Intifada.<br />
