36. Sara-Sara Yama<br />

Once upon a time there were two sisters, the older a child by a<br />

former wife. The mother sent them to fetch water while their father<br />

was away. She gave the younger girl a good dipper so she could dip<br />

water quickly, but the older girl's dipper was broken and she could not<br />

get any water. A feudal lord's procession passed by and the feudal<br />

lord took a fancy to the older girl. He wanted to take her with him to<br />

his castle. The girl requested that he ask her mother, so one of his<br />

men went to the mother's house. The mother said the younger one was<br />

nicer and begged them to take her instead. The man returned to the<br />

feudal lord with this message. The feudal lord decided to compare<br />

their intelligence to choose. He told the woman to prepare a tray with<br />

some salt, a dish, and a sprig of pine. She was to put the dish on the
