We will grow more <strong>of</strong> our own timber<br />

To boost our employment-equity goals on senior academic<br />

and research levels management looks at different ways to<br />

achieve <strong>the</strong> numerical goals. More focus is to be placed on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Grow Our Own Timber Programme (GOOT) and<br />

mentoring. Two new projects for “growing our own timber”<br />

for academic positions have been approved, as well as<br />

a Workplace Learning Internship initiative for support services.<br />

There is also a project in <strong>the</strong> pipeline for <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> leadership among promising black academic<br />

and support staff to equip <strong>the</strong>m for senior and high-level<br />

management positions.<br />

GOOT help transformasie bevorder<br />

Die GOOT-program vorm deel van die strategiese prioriteite<br />

wat meehelp om die oorho<strong>of</strong>se transformasieplan<br />

aan die <strong>UV</strong> te bestuur. Dit is een van die inisiatiewe wat<br />

reeds in 2001 ingestel is om gelykberegtiging van personeel<br />

te bevorder.<br />

Dit program behels twee beursprogramme – A.W.<br />

Mellon en die Atlantic Philantrophies. Studente uit aan gewese<br />

groepe, wat akademiese loopbane wil volg en oor<br />

voldoende potensiaal beskik, het studiebeurse ontvang om<br />

meesters- <strong>of</strong> Ph.D.-grade te behaal om hulle voor te berei<br />

vir akademiese aanstellings en om die ouerwordende korps<br />

aka demici in ’n nuwe bedeling te vervang. Genote is gekoppel<br />

aan ervare studieleiers oor dissiplines heen.<br />

Die huidige program loop aan die einde van 2008 ten<br />

einde en daarom is die twee nuwe voorstelle deur bestuur<br />

aanvaar om die voortbestaan van die insiatiewe te verseker.<br />

Die eerste voorstel beoog om studente nasionaal te werf vir<br />

die voltooiing van ’n meestersgraad oor ’n tweejaarperiode<br />

waarna hulle aangestel word op die vlak van junior lektoraat<br />

/ lektoraat. In die tweede sal huidige personeel bygestaan<br />

word om hul meesters- <strong>of</strong> Ph.D.-grade te verwerf vir<br />

aanstelling in meer senior posisies.<br />

Die <strong>UV</strong> voorsien ’n inname van ongeveer 60 kandidate<br />

in elk van die twee programme. Dit sal in drie groepe oor<br />

’n periode van drie jaar plaasvind met 20 kandidate per<br />

groep.<br />

Vanweë die erns om gelykberegtiging rakende per soneel<br />

te bereik, sal tien kandidate in elk van die programme<br />

uit interne bronne befonds word totdat eksterne fondse<br />

gegenereer kan word. Die eerste voorstel sal aan die begin<br />

van 2008 ’n aanvang neem en die tweede in die tweede<br />

semester van 2008.<br />

Bursaries to promote programme<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Mellon Programme two new bursaries were awarded<br />

in 2007. Of <strong>the</strong> current intake, nine doctoral and thirteen<br />

master’s degree students have completed <strong>the</strong>ir studies. Five<br />

masters’ degree students left <strong>the</strong> programme on completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir degrees. Eight students are pursuing <strong>the</strong>ir Ph.Ds.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> group involved in <strong>the</strong>ir Ph.Ds two accepted<br />

appointments outside <strong>the</strong> UFS. Fifteen fellows accepted<br />

positions within <strong>the</strong> UFS. Two left <strong>the</strong> programme prior to<br />

obtaining any qualification.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Mellon Programme Mr Kingdom Moshounyane<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department Drama and Theatre Arts received a<br />

bursary to complete part <strong>of</strong> his doctoral studies in Norway.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Atlantic Philantrophies programme one new<br />

fellow was awarded a bursary in 2007. Of <strong>the</strong> current intake<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ph.D. students (Faculty <strong>of</strong> Law), one Ph.D. study was<br />

completed in 2007, one submitted a <strong>the</strong>sis and ano<strong>the</strong>r is<br />

due to submit. All three were appointed in academic<br />

positions. One student (Faculty <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences) will<br />

complete a Ph.D. in 2008. One completed a master’s<br />

degree, submitted in 2007 and is due to register for a Ph.D.<br />

in 2008.<br />

Vordering in sommige departemente<br />

Sommige departemente in die Fakulteit Natuur wetenskappe<br />

het reeds veel vermag ten opsigte van die transformasie<br />

van hul personeelpr<strong>of</strong>iel. Die Departement Antropo<br />

logie het ’n 50:00-verdeling ten opsigte van diversiteit.
