Intern psychometrists come from the Department of Psychology and Industrial Psychology and 37 have been trained. A total of 54 house-committee members were also trained to assist with the first-year Language Proficiency Testing. To help a diverse group of students, a Sesotho speaking psychologist has been appointed as from 1 November 2007. An arrangement has been made with the Department of Psychology to provide the unit with a Sesotho speaking intern psychologist every year. UFS continues to accommodate international students whose first language is neither English nor Afrikaans. A number of international students was tested for language proficiency and referred to the Department English for a language course in order to give them the opportunity to study at this university. A total of 5 000 students were seen in therapy sessions, and 164 for career counseling. Architecture students also received debriefing after the suicide of one of the fellow students. Kommunikasie meer vaartbelyn Een van die hoogtepunte van 2007 was die imple mentering van ’n Studenteportaal op die UV se webblad. Die projek is ’n gesamentlike poging van Webdienste en Studente Ontwikkeling en Sukses. Die Studenteportaal bied aan studente relevante inligting op een sentrale plek. Die selfdiensfasiliteit op die Studenteportaal, wat met ’n gebruikersnaam en wagwoord beskerm word, bied aan studente vertroulike inligting, insluitende hulle eksamenuitslae en finansiële state. Die sukses van die Studenteportaal word weerspieël in gebruikerstatistiek, wat aandui dat daar tot 14 000 besoeke per dag was. ’n Selfoonnavraagstelsel is ook ontwikkel om studente in staat te stel om deur middel van hulle selfone onmiddellik toegang te kry tot hulle eksamenuitslae en finansiële state. Webdienste het ook ’n SMS-stelsel uitgerol. Hierdie webgebaseerde stelsel, wat van PeopleSoft-data gebruik kan maak, stel UV-personeel in staat om, teen ’n goedkoop tarief, maklik met studente te kommunikeer. Pogings om studentelewe aantrekliker te maak Oor die afgelope paar jare is talle projekte aangepak om studente lewe by Kovsies meer aantreklik te maak en te be lyn met die visie van die universiteit. Hieronder val die inrigting van studentefasiliteite (veral Thakaneng-brug) teen ’n koste van R26,5 miljoen, die student- en voet ganger vriendelike kampus, wandelpaaie, opgradering van hoof kampus se sportfasiliteite (soos die astrohokkievelde in 2006-7), die verbetering van die sportfasiliteite op die Qwaqwa-kampus, die skepping van meer inklusiewe jool akti witeite, veral aangehelp deur die nuwe Jolkol op die Weskampus, ’n meer inklusiewe intervarsity en ander sport aktiwiteite en die diversiteitsproses wat in die koshuise aangepak is. Kovsies skitter op die sportveld Die UV het in 2007 talle suksesse in sport gehad, te veel om te noem. In rugby en netbal het die UV nasionaal en internasionaal die instelling se naam hoog gehou. Talle voormalige Shimlas was deel van die seëvierende Springbok-wêreldbekerrugbyspan, en dr. Derik Coetzee van die Departement Menslike Bewegingskunde het naam gemaak as kondisioneringsafrigter van die Springbokspan. Burta de Kock was die afrigter van die Protea-netbalspan. ’n Hele aantal Kovsies het ook Proteakleure verwerf. Die UV se netbalspan het ook in nasionale universiteitskonteks uitgeblink as die onbetwiste beste span. Studente bly die hart waarom alles by die Universiteit van die Vrystaat draai. ascertain whether the current structure – where the rugby club functions as a more or less autonomous legal body with its own constitution and executive committee “controlling” rugby at the UFS – is reconcilable with modern demands of good governance and ac countability. A consultant audited the rugby structure and produced a comprehensive report. The report served as a basis for the creation of task teams that would focus on specific areas such as the amendment of the rugby-club constitution. Discussions between the Rector and the Cheetahs Company on strategic cooperation continued. History was also made with the appointment of Jaco Swanepoel as the first fulltime head coach for rugby. Commercialisation of sport gets a boost A strategic Sports Plan was accepted in 2002 and a Sport Commercialisation Plan in 2005. The implementation of the Sports Plan was managed for some time with outside consultants. This has not worked very well, although Annual Review • 2007 55 important groundwork has been laid. Part of the reason for the lack of progress has been the absence of co-ordination and synergy between the different sport divisions – KovsieSport, the Centre for Exercise and Sport Science Services (CESSS) and Sport Commercialisation (in its infancy). Another has been the absence of a full-time, dedicated manager who could take the Sports Plan and the Sport Commercialisation Plan further, given new and changing circumstances. Also required was someone with the necessary business contacts and entrepreneurial expertise to generate more funding and sponsorships. It could help the sport to be liberated from the budgetary constraints that it will always face at an academic institution. Mr Mickey Gordon, who has taken early retirement from North-West University, was appointed as head of a consolidated sport cluster for a period of five years. KovsieSport, the Sport Commercialisation Division, and CESSS will report to him.
