Astro hockey fields were constructed at a cost of about R16 million. The facilities help to retain good hockey players for the UFS and the Free State. The
project is in co-operation with schools in Bloemfontein.
Millions pumped into new facilities
and upgrading
Notable current academic projects are the new Computer
Lab building of R19 million and the complete refurbishment
and extention of the Chemistry Building to the amount of
R51 million. The new Examination and Test Centre is an
important project completed in 2007, adding to the quality of
the university’s assessment process. The old student centre
was refurbished for this purpose. The centre can accommodate
a thousand students.
The new Computer Lab will be equipped with 815
computers and is the first new building on the Main Campus
in Bloemfontein since the construction of the Thakaneng
Bridge Student Centre in 2003. The Computer Lab is in
addition to other existing computer labs on campus and
will assist students in programmes where they will need
computers to a greater extent.
A new computer laboratory on the Qwaqwa Campus
was also commissioned in 2007. The laboratory, with 57
computers, is used by staff and students. The Dell Foundation
donated the computers to the UFS in March 2007.
Repair work is also done on the Chemistry Building
after a fire broke out in one of the laboratories. It had an
influence on the completion date of the Chemistry Building,
which is now only expected to be in 2009.
Die UV se Raadsaal is vir die eerste keer sedert die
gebou in die 1970’s opgerig is, verbeter. Dit was veral
nodig om beter voorsiening te maak vir tolking en om
die kop peling van rekenaars by elke plek moontlik te
maak ter onder steuning van die UV se elektroniese
vergaderingstelsel.
Groot opgraderingswerk is aan die lugversorgingstelsel
in die UV Sasol Biblioteek onderneem. Die stelsel in die
gebou, wat in 1983 in gebruik geneem is, het nie meer
doeltreffende gewerk nie. Tydens konstruksiewerk het ’n
beperkte brand tot die dood van twee van die kontrakteur se
werkers gelei. Dit was vir die almal by die UV ’n groot skok.
Die insident het gelei tot ’n vertraging van die projek.
