<strong>Jaaroorsig</strong> • 2007<br />

The four credit-bearing short learning programmes and<br />

occasional studies in Research Development, developed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> division HES&R are available to all departments and<br />

faculties at <strong>the</strong> UFS. In 2007 two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se short courses<br />

(SPRESK: Writing and computer skills for <strong>the</strong> researcher,<br />

and SPQUAL: Introduction to Qualitative research) were<br />

presented for <strong>the</strong> first time. Twelve staff members have<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> courses successfully.<br />

With regard to occasional studies several students registered<br />

for single modules during 2007. The largest was <strong>the</strong><br />

groups <strong>of</strong> sixteen each for HOS512 (Assessment) and<br />

HOS518 (Learning Facilitation). If overlapping is considered,<br />

about 45 different students registered for occasional<br />

studies in 2007.<br />

Health Systems Centre a valuable asset<br />

Since its inception in 1993, <strong>the</strong> Centre for Health Systems<br />

Research and Development has shown unremitting growth<br />

and expansion in terms <strong>of</strong> staffing, projects, <strong>the</strong> scope and<br />

diversity <strong>of</strong> its research and development activities, and its<br />

financial standing. After fifteen years <strong>of</strong> successful operation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> centre can lay claim to commendable experi ence<br />

and expertise in a number <strong>of</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> study and methodological<br />

approaches, and amid an ever-widening basis <strong>of</strong><br />

national and international collaboration in research.<br />

In 2007, excellence in <strong>the</strong> research and developmental<br />

endeavours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre was recognised when its director,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dingie Janse van Rensburg, was promoted to Distinguished<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. In his career <strong>of</strong> 37 years Pr<strong>of</strong>. Van<br />

Rensburg played a vital role in establishing a culture <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific publication among young and upcoming researchers.<br />

He is wellknown, both nationally and inter nationally,<br />

as a researcher, research manager and grant holder<br />

in respect <strong>of</strong> HIV and Aids and Tuberculosis and recipient<br />

<strong>of</strong> numerous awards and commendations.<br />

Diensleer word ’n volwaardige afdeling<br />

Sedert Februarie 2007 is die Afdeling Diensleer onder leiding<br />

van dr. Mabel Erasmus ’n volwaardige akademiese<br />

steun diensafdeling binne SHOSO. Die integrasie van Samelewingsdiens<br />

met onderrig, leer en navorsing is vir ons ’n<br />

strategiese prioriteit. Diensleer bevorder die integrasie van<br />

samelewingsdiens met onderrig en leer.<br />

Die <strong>UV</strong> se Samelewingsdiensbeleid bepaal dat uit eindelik<br />

in elke akademiese program een diensleermodule aangebied<br />

moet word om elke <strong>UV</strong>-student die geleen<strong>the</strong>id te<br />

gee om teoretiese kennis in die praktyk toe te pas. Die doel<br />

is om akademies, persoonlik en pr<strong>of</strong>essioneel te groei en ’n<br />

sin vir burgerlike verantwoordelikheid te ontwikkel. Vanjaar<br />

is reeds 55 diensleermodules aangebied, waarby meer<br />

as ’n duisend studente betrokke was.<br />

Verskeie vorme van ondersteuning is verleen aan <strong>UV</strong>personeel<br />

wat by diensleer betrokke is, insluitend die fasilitering<br />

van akademiese ontwikkeling. Om die kwaliteit van<br />

diensleer aan die <strong>UV</strong> deurlopend te bevorder, word ’n module<br />

oor diensleer vir dosente in die M.A.-program in Hoëronderwysstudies<br />

aangebied. Verskeie gasdosente het bykomende<br />

perspektiewe gebied.<br />

Akademiese uitnemendheid in diensleer word bevorder<br />

deur navorsing oor diensleertemas aan te moedig. ’n Na vorsingsprojek<br />

oor Engagement <strong>of</strong> staff in Community Service<br />

Learning at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Free</strong> <strong>State</strong> is vanjaar<br />

onderneem en ’n akademiese artikel hieroor is aanvaar vir<br />

publikasie. Die studie handel oor personeellede wat by<br />

diensleer betrokke is se beskouinge oor die waarde van<br />

hierdie benadering tot onderrig en leer; hul ervaring rondom<br />

die mate van steun en erkenning wat hulle aan die <strong>UV</strong><br />

ontvang; en hul voorstelle ter verbetering van die stelsel.<br />

Hoewel personeel uiters positief is oor die waarde van<br />

diensleer vir studente en vennote, het die ondersoek getoon<br />

dat ontevredenheid heers oor die billike verrekening van<br />

diensleer in die <strong>UV</strong> se insentief- en bevorderingstelsels. In<br />

die lig hiervan sal ’n proses wat gerig is op billiker ver rekening<br />

van diensleer in prestasiebestuur en bevordering in<br />

2008 aangepak word.<br />

Ten opsigte van Samelewingsdiens is ’n video kon ferensie<br />

oor Service Learning as a basis <strong>of</strong> Research and<br />

Scholarship, wat die bevordering van diensleernavorsing<br />

ten doel gehad het, deur veertien personeellede van die Fakulteit<br />

Geesteswetenskappe bygewoon. Dit is deur pr<strong>of</strong>f.<br />

Bob Bringle en Julie Hatcher van die Indiana <strong>University</strong>-<br />

Purdue <strong>University</strong> Indianapolis (IUPUI) gefasiliteer.<br />

Een van die besondere voordele wat diensleer vir die<br />

<strong>UV</strong> inhou, is dat dit aan studente uit verskillende groeperinge<br />

die geleen<strong>the</strong>id bied om oor die kunsmatige skeiding,<br />

wat deur bywoning van lesings in die onderskeie tale<br />

teweeggebring word, in diverse groepe saam te werk aan<br />

diensleerprojekte in die gemeenskap. Terugvoering het aangedui<br />

dat ’n groter waardering vir die waarde en voordele<br />

van diversiteit by studente teenwoordig is na afloop van<br />

hierdie samewerkingservarings. Gefokusde navorsing hieroor<br />

moet nog onderneem word.<br />

Ploeg terug in die gemeenskap<br />

Die Sentrum vir Volhoubare Landbou en Landelike Ontwikkeling<br />
