Die Sentrum vir Afrikastudie in die Fakulteit Geesteswetenskappe is in November
2007 geloods met ’n openingsrede deur die Adjunkminister van Onderwys, mnr.
Enver Surty. Die sentrum is die uitvloeisel van fakulteitsinisiatiewe, asook die
strategiese visie en herposionering van die UV ten opsigte van sy rol in Afrika.
Dit is die vyfde sentrum van sy soort in Afrika en die tweede in Suid-Afrika. Die sentrum beoog
om op ’n innoverende wyse betrokke te wees by die uitdagings en kwessies van die kontinent.
Die oogmerk sal nagestreef word deur samewerking met plaaslike, streeks- en kontinentale
organisasies en instellings.
Enlarging the footprint internationally
The UFS’s vision of playing a bigger role in the sub-region
and also in Africa as a continent received further momentum
with the appointment of a Head of Internationalisation
from the beginning of 2007. The office is finalising the
UFS Internationalisation Strategy, which will include a
focus on the internationalisation of research. In this regard,
the office will identify international research funding
opportunities and establish contact with large funding
bodies. It will aim to create research opportunities, facilitate
international visits, mobilise research funding, expand
and maintain international research agreements, establish
administrative aid, and expand research membership.
Bande oor (digitale) grense heen gesmee
’n Videokonferensie is in 2007 op die Hoofkampus gehou
waartydens ’n memorandum van verstandhouding met die
Universiteit van Gent in België onderteken is. Die ondertekening
het deel gevorm van ’n weeklange program,
Accenta, waarop Bloemfontein en die Vrystaat die eregaste
was. Akademici van die Departement Rekenaarwetenskap
en Informatika het referate gelewer in een van die forums
wat deel van die program in Gent was. ’n Videokonferensie
oor maniere om die digitale kloof te oorbrug is uit Bloemfontein
en Gent toegespreek en terselfdertyd regstreeks op
die internet uitgesaai. Die rektore van die universiteite van
die Vrystaat en Gent het die ondertekening ook per videokoppeling
gedoen.
More postgraduates drawn
In the Faculty of Humanities the research projects of the
Centre for Health Systems Research and Development
were multi- and interdisciplinary, and multi- and interinstitutional
in nature. The impact of work by the centre
was particularly evident through a Roundtable on Health
Systems and Antiretroviral Access in Bloemfontein in
October. The Roundtable was organised and presented in
collaboration with the Free State Department of Health.
Delegates from as far as Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya,
Zambia, Uganda, Belgium, the USA and France attended.
Conference proceedings will be published to reach regional
and international stakeholders. Staff at the centre supervise
an increasing number of master’s and doctoral studies from
various disciplines, and also from countries like Zambia,
Namibia, Eritrea and Zimbabwe. In this manner the centre
contributes to the research capacity of the region.
Collaborations include the Development Economics
Research Group (DERG) of the World Bank and the
Netherlands Support Programme of the World Bank, the
Department for International Development (UK), the
Flemish International Cooperation Agency, the Center for
Global Development (University of Houston), and the
Department of Sociology, University of Antwerp.
Samewerking voortgesit
Die Eenheid vir Taalbestuur (ETB) het sy samewerking
met die Departement Sport, Kuns en Kultuur van die
Vrystaatse Regering voortgesit rondom die Multilingual
Information Development Programme. Die projek het in
Desember aan die einde van sy derde siklus suksesvol ten
einde geloop. Die jaar is afgesluit met ’n internasionale
colloquium aan die Universiteit van Antwerpen wat by gewoon
is deur verteenwoordigers van die Vrystaatse Pro vinsiale
Regering en die befondser van die projek, die Provinsie
van Antwerpen. Die eenheid het goeie na vorsingsuitsette
gelewer in die vorm van die sesde nom mer in die Van
Schaik-reeks Studies in language policy in South Africa.
Die bundel – Multilingualism and Exclusion – bevat
bydraes deur plaaslike en oorsese kundiges.
