The Ventura County portion <strong>of</strong> the study area showed higher proportions <strong>of</strong> management,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional, sales, and <strong>of</strong>fice occupations, but lower proportions <strong>of</strong> service; farming,<br />

fishing, forestry, construction, extraction and maintenance, production, transportation,<br />

and material moving occupations than those within the City <strong>of</strong> Carpinteria. The area also<br />

showed proportionately higher numbers <strong>of</strong> people employed in agriculture, forestry,<br />

fishing and hunting, mining, retail trade, finance, insurance, real estate, rental and<br />

leasing, pr<strong>of</strong>essional, scientific, management, administrative, and waste management<br />

services but lower proportions <strong>of</strong> people employed in manufacturing, wholesale trade,<br />

arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food service than the City <strong>of</strong><br />

Carpinteria.<br />

The breakdown <strong>of</strong> occupation and industry for both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties<br />

was generally similar to the City <strong>of</strong> Carpinteria, with minor exceptions. Specifically, the<br />

proportion <strong>of</strong> employed persons in Santa Barbara County was lower than that <strong>of</strong> both the<br />

City <strong>of</strong> Carpinteria and Ventura County.<br />

Household Income<br />

Table 2.1-7 illustrates Median Household Income (MHI) and Per Capita Income. MHI is<br />

defined as the middle value <strong>of</strong> all incomes ranging from highest to lowest in a selected<br />
