Sukh Africa. FoUowing a long tradition, hael hastens to fill any<br />

new need and any new deficiency. The Israeli military advisors<br />

are still there, and will be there as long as the regime survives.<br />

The South African Defense Forces enjoy every Israeli achievement<br />

in military technologyI and much of the light and heavy ammition<br />

used to defend apartheid coms &om IsraeL<br />

As we observe the South African Defense Forces in the<br />

townships, in Namibia, or on their parade grounds, we are likely<br />

to see heli weapons, Israeli tactis, and Israeli strak@les?O The<br />

South Aihican idantry carries the Israeli GaM riile, the South<br />

African navy uses heli missile boats, and the South African Air<br />

Force £lies the Israeli KIir jet, known in South Africa as the<br />

Q I d (Kfir in Hebrew for "young lion," which show that the<br />

South Africans were not terribly origmd even in the 2oolo;pid<br />

&aim). The n u h collaboration program, which has been in<br />

force for more than a generation, continues to move Ward<br />

towards fourth- and fifth-generation nuclear weaponry. Only<br />

recently, Israeli o m have bew seen on Marion Island in the<br />

southern Indian Ocean, where Sauth Africa and he1 are<br />

bdding a nuclear test site."<br />

In civilian matters, the Israeli presence is less substantial but<br />

no less hkndy. When the United Nations published a blacklist<br />

of e k who have perfosmed in South Africa despite the<br />

international boycott, 26 nations were included. Of these, Great<br />

Britain was kt, the URited States second, and Israel third.<br />

Visits by Issgeli artists and athletes to South Africa have been<br />
