SECONDARY INDICATORS<br />

Increase in tourist expenditures<br />

Indicator D6: Tourism room revenue.<br />

Rationale: One of the key emerging sectors in the economy is the tourism sector.<br />

Given the relative remoteness of the North and particularly the Central Coast,<br />

most visitors to the regions will require commercial overnight accommodation.<br />

Therefore tourism room revenue will provide a proxy for changes in the tourism<br />

sector in the plan areas. There are obvious short comings with tourism room<br />

revenue as an indicator, particularly where there are large number of visitors who<br />

arrive by boats not requiring accommodation or where the actual data collection<br />

system does not associate the expenditure to plan areas where it takes place, e.g. a<br />

fishing lodge with an owner registered in Campbell River yet the lodge is on the<br />

Central Coast. These data also do not distinguish between revenue from tourism<br />

and revenue from those whose accommodation is work-related.<br />

Data Source: Quarterly data on room revenue are available through BC Stats –<br />

Ministry of Labour and Citizenship (BC Tourism Room Revenue by Region)<br />

annually. It provides a total for the Central Coast Regional District which matches<br />

the Central Coast Plan area and Skeena Queen Charlotte Regional District which<br />

does not match the North Coast plan area. Prince Rupert is broken out separately<br />

which accounts for most of the North Coast accommodation revenue, as there are<br />
