5.5 Assembly laboratory (TIF - Tracker Integration Facility, building 186)<br />

TIF (Fig. 54) is a laboratory located at CERN Meyrin site in building 186. It has one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest cle<strong>an</strong> rooms<br />

(class 10000) <strong>an</strong>d is pl<strong>an</strong>ned to be used <strong>for</strong> assembly <strong>the</strong> Triple-<strong>GEM</strong>s <strong>for</strong> stations GE1/1 <strong>an</strong>d GE2/1.<br />

In Fig. 55 is shown <strong>the</strong> tentative pl<strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> assembly laboratory which is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> big cle<strong>an</strong> room. For GEi/1<br />

project we have 90m 2 from <strong>the</strong> total laboratory area. It has special entr<strong>an</strong>ce access needed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> cle<strong>an</strong> room<br />

conditions <strong>an</strong>d also a big tr<strong>an</strong>sport portal suitable <strong>for</strong> big tr<strong>an</strong>sportation needs <strong>for</strong> materials <strong>an</strong>d chambers deliveries.<br />

We intend to host two main activities: production <strong>an</strong>d testing. We have several tables <strong>an</strong>d cupboards needed those<br />

purposes, <strong>for</strong> ist<strong>an</strong>ce we have two optical tables large enough to fit <strong>the</strong> full size detector as shown in Fig. 55.<br />

For future production <strong>an</strong>d QC procedures in building 186 <strong>the</strong>re are ten gas lines to be installed (Fig. 56) which<br />

will provide: Ar, CO2, CF4, N, Ar/CO2 premixed <strong>an</strong>d five additional spare lines. All <strong>the</strong> gas cylinders will be<br />

placed outside <strong>the</strong> building where <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> delivery gas point. To connect <strong>the</strong> external gas point to <strong>the</strong> lab ten<br />

stainless steel gas pipes <strong>of</strong> 10mm <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong> exhaust line <strong>of</strong> 22mm are <strong>for</strong>eseen. Inside <strong>the</strong> lab <strong>the</strong>re will be <strong>the</strong> main<br />

gas distribution p<strong>an</strong>el from which <strong>the</strong> gas supply will be provided to six small p<strong>an</strong>els across <strong>the</strong> lab.<br />

<strong>GEM</strong> foils will be h<strong>an</strong>dled in <strong>the</strong> TIF cle<strong>an</strong> room to avoid <strong>an</strong>y contact with dirty environment. The detector<br />

assembly will be per<strong>for</strong>med following a new solution which is simple <strong>an</strong>d cost-effective, imperative <strong>for</strong> a largescale<br />

production. The self-stretching technique is described in Section 3.<br />

The TIF assembly facility will host <strong>the</strong> <strong>GEM</strong> assembly <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> quality control <strong>of</strong> each assembled detector.<br />

Once detectors are assembled gain uni<strong>for</strong>mity measurements will be per<strong>for</strong>med to validate <strong>the</strong> chamber response<br />

using a cosmic st<strong>an</strong>d facility, be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> chambers will be tr<strong>an</strong>sported to <strong>CMS</strong> <strong>for</strong> installation.<br />

Similar facilities exist in some participating institutes <strong>an</strong>d once approved, detailed pl<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d sharing <strong>of</strong> work <strong>for</strong><br />

large scale production will be drawn out.<br />
