9 Budget <strong>an</strong>d resources<br />

The budget <strong>an</strong>d resources are shown in Table 18 <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> 160 Triple-<strong>GEM</strong> detectors. The price<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>GEM</strong> foils has been largely reduced recently due to technological adv<strong>an</strong>ces in <strong>the</strong> last two years. With<br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fabrication taking place at CERN using <strong>the</strong> new assembly <strong>an</strong>d production facilities being prepared<br />

(see Section 5.4), <strong>the</strong> drift pl<strong>an</strong>es, readout pl<strong>an</strong>es <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> complete detector assembly will be done under one ro<strong>of</strong><br />

lending <strong>an</strong> optimization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> resources shown under <strong>the</strong> heading “<strong>Detector</strong>s”.<br />

The quality control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> detectors will be done as explained in Section 5.4 <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> relev<strong>an</strong>t cost is shown under<br />

<strong>the</strong> heading <strong>of</strong> ’Chamber QC’. The installation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two stations <strong>an</strong>d services namely gas <strong>an</strong>d cooling, comprise<br />

a large fraction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> costs as explained in items 3-6. These costs are extrapolated from <strong>the</strong> actual costs incurred<br />

in <strong>the</strong> installation <strong>an</strong>d commissioning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RPC stations.<br />

The total cost is 7.5 MCHF, <strong>of</strong> which 4 MCHF is <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> electronics. The number <strong>of</strong> ch<strong>an</strong>nels that have been<br />

considered is 270 K <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> GE1/1 station <strong>an</strong>d 2.5 million <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> GE2/1 station to enh<strong>an</strong>ce also <strong>the</strong> tracking <strong>an</strong>d<br />

triggering option in <strong>the</strong> best possible m<strong>an</strong>ner, as discussed in Section 5. The cost <strong>for</strong> number <strong>of</strong> ch<strong>an</strong>nel is marginal<br />

once <strong>the</strong> initial cost <strong>for</strong> electronics developments have been incurred.<br />

The participating institute await <strong>the</strong> approval to approach <strong>the</strong>ir respective funding ag<strong>an</strong>cies <strong>for</strong> commitment to <strong>the</strong><br />

project <strong>an</strong>d initial indications are positive. In comparison <strong>the</strong> present RPC system readout is 70 K ch<strong>an</strong>nels <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

barrel <strong>an</strong>d 40 K ch<strong>an</strong>nels in <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ward system.<br />
