6 Electronics system<br />

6.1 Introduction<br />

This chapter discusses <strong>the</strong> electronics system currently <strong>for</strong>eseen <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> control <strong>an</strong>d readout <strong>of</strong> <strong>GEM</strong> detectors<br />

within <strong>CMS</strong>. At <strong>the</strong> most basic level <strong>the</strong> system c<strong>an</strong> be divided into two main regions; <strong>the</strong> “on-detector” region<br />

<strong>an</strong>d “<strong>of</strong>f-detector” region, <strong>the</strong> latter being located in <strong>the</strong> counting room. All electronics located in <strong>the</strong> on-detector<br />

region have to be resist<strong>an</strong>t to <strong>the</strong> radiation. This typically requires custom made electronics components whilst<br />

electronics located in <strong>the</strong> counting room c<strong>an</strong> typically be designed using relatively inexpensive <strong>an</strong>d available “<strong>of</strong>f<br />

<strong>the</strong> shelf” components. Communication between <strong>the</strong> on-detector region <strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong>f-detector region will be done via<br />

optical fibres which also need to be resist<strong>an</strong>t to radiation. Fig. 58 shows a block diagram <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main elements <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> system.<br />
