6. Materials and methods.<br />

Regional epidemiologists in England, and public health colleagues in Wales,<br />

were contacted in Autumn 1999 and invited to participate in the<br />

Campylobacter Sentinel Surveillance Scheme, which was due to commence<br />

in April <strong>of</strong> the following year. This invitation was disseminated to Health<br />

Authority-based Consultants in Disease Control, who then agreed or declined<br />

to participate. The following health authorities agreed to participate:<br />

Yorkshire and the Humber<br />

o Bradford; Leeds<br />

North West<br />

o Bury and Rochdale; Manchester; North Cumbria; North West<br />

Lancashire; Salford and Trafford; South Lancashire; Stockport;<br />

West Pennine; Wigan and Bolton<br />

West Midlands<br />

o Birmingham; Herefordshire<br />

East Midlands<br />

o Leicestershire; Nottingham<br />

Eastern England<br />

o North Essex<br />

London<br />

o Barnet, Enfield and Haringey<br />

South East<br />

o East Kent; Southampton and South West Hampshire<br />

South West<br />

o South and West Devon<br />

Wales<br />

o Bro Taf; Dyfed Powys<br />

Each NHS region in England at that time was represented, although a<br />

greater proportion <strong>of</strong> health authorities in the north <strong>of</strong> the country were<br />

represented. The sentinel population was broadly representative <strong>of</strong> England<br />

and Wales as a whole (table 2, overleaf). The only major difference between<br />

health authorities which participated and those which did not was the degree<br />

<strong>of</strong> urbanisation, where a greater proportion <strong>of</strong> the sentinel population resided<br />

in less sparse urban areas. Indian and Pakistani communities were also<br />

slightly over-represented.<br />
