8.6 Checking the Auxiliary Winding<br />

Prerequisites <strong>Generator</strong> shut down<br />

Procedure Follow the procedures below to check the auxiliary winding.<br />

1. Open the large hinged panel and locate the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR).<br />

2. Disconnect the red wire from the AVR.<br />

3. Disconnect the red wire from the blue wire of the lug door switch.<br />

4. Measure the resistances across the two red wires.<br />

Is 1.4–2.7 Ohms measured?<br />

Yes ____ No ____ Your reading<br />

Continue. Remove the vent cover from the generator and<br />

check the generator for damage.<br />

5. Check each red wire for continuity to ground.<br />

Does each wire measure “OPEN” or “OL” to ground?<br />

Yes ____ No ____ Your reading<br />

Auxiliary winding<br />

is OK<br />

6. Reconnect the wiring.<br />

The auxiliary winding has now been checked. Continue with Section 8.7 Checking<br />

the Exciter Stator.<br />
