2. METHOD—terms highlighting the method of evangelism (not exhaustive, all terms as translated in
the NASB)/Context:
Introduction: Through many years of study, this section of verbs has grown quite large to include
over different Greek 100 verbs. I have attempted to keep verb cognates organized by their root,
which sometimes overlaps meaning with other verbal groups. However the following are the
main categories by which the verbs may be more quickly identified and searched (the index at
the rear of the text also listing every Greek verb and noun in this study alphabetically):
1—EVANGELIZE AND COGNATES
2—TO PROCLAIM
3—TO TESTIFY
4—TO SPEAK OR SAY
5—TO TEACH OR EXPLAIN
6—TO DEMONSTRATE OR PROVE
7—TO ADMONISH, WARN, PERSUADE, BEG
8—MISCELLANEOUS PROCLAMATIONAL VERBS
9—METAPHORICAL VERBS FOR EVANGELIZING
Further Studies:
10—COMMUNICATORY VERBS NOT USED FOR EVANGELIZING
11—VERBS DESCRIBING THE OPPOSITE OF EVANGELIZING
12—VERBS DISAVOWED IN EVANGELIZING
13—VERBS USED BOTH FOR AND NOT FOR EVANGELIZING.
Totals from the following study:
501 total NT uses of the 113 verbs (8 OT LXX verbs not included) and 77 verbal uses of the 18
nouns for a total of 577 NT verbal terms in evangelism contexts!
113 NT verbs used in the context of evangelism, as compared to 1,832 total individual verbs
in the Byzantine Textform (NT), or 6.2% of the total verbs; 495
501 total uses is a 1.7% of the 28,672 total verbs used in the NT; 496 (1,832 NT verbs are
used 28,672 times = each verb is used an average of 15.7 times).
Of the 543 evangelistic uses:
58 verbs and 11 nouns are used only one time in evangelism contexts, for a total of 69 verbal
forms;
19 verbs and 2 nouns are used twice in evangelism contexts, for a total of 21 verbal forms;
So 90 verbal forms are used once or twice only.
It appears that God has provided a fairly extensive semantic range by which the concept of
NT evangelizing may be ascertained!
It is also made evident from this study that the Great Commission is not only commanded,
but it is also exemplified and clearly elaborated in the pages of the NT.
495According to the parsing search engine of BibleWorks 9.0, using the Byzantine Textform New Testament
Greek.
496Ibid. For example, there are 2,500 uses of the verb eivmi, and 2,315 uses of le,gw in the Byzantine Textform.
